Baseball: Sheridan, GC walk off with victories

Sheridan finished its Hoosier Heartland Conference series with Eastern with a split after a dramatic win on Wednesday at the Blackhawks’ field.
Sheridan beat the Comets 8-7 in eight innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Cameron Hovey led off by reaching first base on error, then moved to second base. Silas DeVaney came up to bat, and his right field single sent Hovey home and won the game.
The regulation part of the contest was back and forth the whole way through. Eastern scored three runs in the top of the first. Sheridan got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Cole Bales scored on a wild pitch.
The Blackhawks scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-3 lead. Preston Weir scored on Camden Spencer’s RBI groundout, then Cole Macintosh got home on a wild pitch. Hovey singled in Corbin Murray, then Hovey and DeVaney scored after Collin McNair reached on error.
Weir singled in Christian Clausen in the fourth inning to give Sheridan a 7-3 lead. But a three-run home run in the fifth inning got the Comets within 7-6, and they tied the game in the seventh with one out. The ‘Hawks turned a double play to end the inning, and the score stayed 7-7 until Sheridan’s run in the eighth.
Murray went 3-for-5 at the plate, while DeVaney had two hits. Gavin Reners pitched the first five innings and struck out seven, and Cole Bales got the win in relief.
In the first game of the series on Tuesday, Sheridan fell to Eastern 11-1 in six innings. The Blackhawks scored their run in the third inning; Spencer got home on Hovey’s RBI groundout. McNair hit a double to lead off the second inning.
Sheridan is 6-9 and plays Saturday morning at Class 2A No. 8 Carroll.

Guerin Catholic scored a walkoff victory on Wednesday, as an RBI single sent the Golden Eagles past Park Tudor 7-6 in a home game.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Ferrucci reached on error. He moved to second base on Adam Novelen’s RBI groundout, then was sent to third after Josh Schaff hit a single. Sam Tabor came to the plate, and his base hit to left field sent Ferrucci in to score.
The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Guerin cut that lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the first when Ferrucci doubled home Clay Patton and Davis Wagner. Both teams scored a run in the third inning, Wagner batted in Braden Reel for GC in the bottom of the third.
The Golden Eagles jumped ahead 6-5 in the fourth inning. Reel’s double sent Cuinn Morrow home, Tabor scored on Will Fremion’s RBI groundout, then Reel got home on Patton’s RBI groundout. Park Tudor tied the game in the sixth inning and neither team scored again until Guerin Catholic’s seventh-inning run.
Schaff finished the game with two hits. Wagner got the pitching win.
The Golden Eagles are 8-12 and play Bishop Dwenger Friday at Lafayette Central Catholic for the first game of a tournament.

Carmel cruised past Pike 12-1 in a Wednesday five-inning Metropolitan Conference game at Hartman Field.
The 4A No. 5 Greyhounds scored in each inning, including six runs in the second inning. Tim Haas hit a three-run triple in that inning. Cody Kantz smacked a two-run triple in the third inning to get Carmel up 10-1. Jackson Micheels and JD Rogers both hit one double.
Kantz went on to score three runs in the game and had two hits. Dylan Zenor got the pitching win.
Carmel is 9-0-1 in the conference and 17-1-1 overall. The Greyhounds continue MIC play on Tuesday by hosting 4A No. 3 Center Grove to begin a series.

Hamilton Heights earned a Hoosier Conference sweep of Lewis Cass on Wednesday, winning 5-2 at the Kings’ field.
The Huskies got on the board in the third inning when Guy Griffey scored on Jared Michael’s RBI groundout. In the fourth inning, Dean Mason got on base with a double, then later got home on an error.
Heights added three more runs in the fifth inning. Nate Hulen doubled in Michael, Erik Malott scored on a passed ball, then Mason smacked his second double of the game to bring in Hulen.
Sam Allen also hit a double for the Huskies.
Brayden Elkin threw an outstanding complete game, striking out 16 against five hits and one walk.
Heights is 6-1 in conference play and 10-6 overall. The Huskies host Northwestern today in another conference game.

Fishers was stunned by Avon Wednesday night, as the Orioles scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Tigers 8-5 in a home Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.
Fishers scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings. Joey Brenczewski got the first run on a sacrifice fly by Caulin Brown. In the fourth inning, Zach Cox scored when Jack Brown reached on error.
The Tigers added three runs in the sixth inning. Carson Dunn got home on Jack Brown’s sacrifice fly, then Dom Oliverio singled in Brenczewski. JP Preston batted in Oliverio, and the score was 5-1. But Avon loaded the bases, eventually tied the game at 5-5 and took the lead on a two-run double.
Brenczewski was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Preston and Braun both had two hits, including a double.
Fishers is 3-6 in conference play and 12-10 overall. The Tigers travel to Avon today to complete the HCC series.
