Baseball: Shamrocks complete sweep of Tigers

The Westfield baseball team completed a Hoosier Crossroads Conference sweep of Fishers on Friday, beating the host Tigers 5-0.
The Class 4A No. 2 Shamrocks took control of the game early with two runs in the top of the second inning. Collin Lindsey singled home Cody South for the first run, then Ryland Sutcliffe and Jack Woodard scored when Brayden Hibler reached on error.
Keaton Mahan got Westfield’s fourth run when he scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning. The ‘Rocks got one more in the sixth inning; Hibler singled home Mac Clarke.
Lindsey was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Mahan hit a double. Logan Nickel pitched a complete game for the win, striking out four and allowing only four hits.
JP Preston went 2-for-3 for Fishers, including a double. Jack Brown pitched five innings, tossing six strikeouts.
Westfield is still perfect in HCC play at 6-0 and is 10-1-1 overall. The Shamrocks begin another conference series Thursday at Noblesville. The Tigers are 2-4 in the conference and 7-7 overall, they will play a doubleheader at Huntington North this afternoon.

Hamilton Heights picked up a Hoosier Conference sweep of Tipton on Friday, cruising past the Blue Devils 8-0 in a home game.
The Huskies started with two runs in the first inning. Nate Hulen got on base with a triple, then later scored on a passed ball. Seconds later, Jared Michael singled in Brayden Elkin. In the second inning, Lucas Letsinger got home on an RBI fielder’s choice from Sam Allen.
Heights blew the game open in the fourth inning by scoring five runs. Drew VanOeveren got two runs in with a center field base hit, sending Harrison Hochstedler and Isaac Tuma in to score. Allen scored on an error, then Hulen doubled home VanOeveren. Elkin came up to the plate next, and smacked a right field hit to send in Hulen.
Hulen was 3-for-4 at the plate. Letsinger pitched a complete game, striking out 12 and allowing only two hits.
The Huskies improved to 3-1 in the conference and 4-6 overall. Heights hosts Elwood today in a doubleheader.

Hamilton Southeastern got a walkoff HCC victory on Friday, as Cole Earlewine’s double scored the winning run for the Royals in their 6-5 win over Avon at Ken Seitz Field.
Southeastern got on the board in the first inning when J.T. Mutchner singled home Noah Wolf. In the second inning, Colin St. Clair smacked a double into center field to score Payton Hilfiker and J. Bush.
The Royals led 3-0, but the Orioles tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning with an RBI single and back-to-back RBI doubles. Southeastern was able to move ahead in the bottom of the third when Hilfiker’s single scored Griffen Haas.
Avon jumped ahead in the top of the fifth inning with a two-RBI double. The Royals had to wait until the seventh inning to make their move, but it was worth it. Mutchner led off with a double, then Jason Dettman came in to run for him. He moved to third base after Haas reached on an error, then tied the game by scoring on a passed ball.
Logan Callaghan had come in to run for Haas. He stole second base, moved to third on the passed ball and got home on Earlewine’s big hit, clinching the win for HSE.
Mutchner had two hits on the night. John McCall got the win in relief, striking out seven over five innings and giving up only two hits.
Southeastern improved to 2-4 in the conference and 7-6-1 overall. The Royals will play a doubleheader with Homestead this afternoon at Huntington College.

University cruised to an 8-1 Pioneer Conference win at Seton Catholic on Friday.
The Class 2A No. 9 Trailblazers scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Luke Hellman got home when Tyler Galyean reached on error, then Quincy Harper got home on Matt Moore’s RBI groundout.
Moore hit a third-inning triple that scored Harper again, then would later get home on an error to put University up 4-0. The ‘Blazers added three more runs in the sixth inning; Adam Oxley got home when Weber Morse reached on error, Morse scored on a passed ball and Grady Hay also got home on a passed ball, this after drawing a walk and stealing second and third bases.
University completed its scoring in the seventh inning when Oxley cranked a triple into left field to send Owen Schellhase in. Hellman, Galyean and Oxley all had two hits, while Jake Hooker hit a double. The ‘Blazers stole 13 bases in the game, Galyean had three steals. Galyean also pitched a complete game, striking out 11 against two hits and one walk.
The Trailblazers are 8-3 and host Bethesda Christian on Monday.

Noblesville dropped an HCC game 5-3 at Franklin Central on Friday.
The Flashes got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Millers began to chip away at that lead in the middle innings, first with a run in the fourth inning; Bryce Adams singled in Drew Niswonger.
Kolbi Kazmierski’s right field hit brought Josh Kern home in the fifth inning, getting Noblesville within 3-2. The Millers tied the game in the sixth inning when Dean White got home on a passed ball. But Franklin Central got back in front with a two-RBI single and held the lead from there.
Ty Haley pitched four innings for Noblesville, striking out five.
The Millers are 3-3 in the conference and 4-7 overall. Noblesville hosts Franklin Community at 7 p.m. tonight.
