Hits and runs would wind up being at a premium in Thursday night’s battle between Cathedral and University. Two teams that are priming up for their respective state tournaments put together quite the chess match.
Cathedral would use a five-run sixth inning to get the big road win at RoundTripper Academy, 6-2.
The Irish struck first in the top of the third when Patrick Mazur stole home for the early 1-0 lead.
University would answer right back in the bottom when Jake Hooker lined a double to right to score Owen Schellhase to tie it up 1-1.
The bases got loaded right away for the Irish in the sixth on a leadoff hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks. Another couple of walks from Hooker, who came in to relieve Grayson Knight, put Cathedral up 3-1.
Carson Johnson lengthened the Irish lead to 5-1 with a two-run single. Hooker would balk a run that made it 6-1.
The Trailblazers tried to stage a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Weber Morse slugged a solo home run to right, but University couldn’t muster more than that, dropping the home game, 6-2.
Dylan Haslett went the distance on the mound for Cathedral, striking out 14, while walking just one.
Grayson Knight went five innings and took the loss, walking seven Irish, but was able to strike out eight.
Covenant Christian came to RoundTripper and played with purpose in Friday night’s battle with the Trailblazers and came out with a 10-3 win.
The Warriors were on a mission, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Brock Buckley led off the game with a home run.
University was able to get their first score in the second. Owen Schellhase tripled and later scored on a groundout from Grayson Knight.
A six-run top of the fourth would doom the ‘Blazers and they wouldn’t be able to come back offensively.
The Trailblazers were able to add one more run in a last-ditch effort in the seventh, but lost the game 10-3.
Covenant Christian (15-9) won its fifth consecutive game. The Warriors will face Ben Davis at 10 a.m. today.
University (18-6) lost its second game in a row and hopes to get back on the winning track in a tournament at Bedford North Lawrence today. The Trailblazers’ first game is against Silver Creek (22-6) at 1 p.m.
