Reel’s walkoff single sends Huskies past Prairie
A walkoff single by Gabe Reel gave Hamilton Heights a 5-4 victory over Clinton Prairie Friday at the Huskies’ field.
The Gophers had scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. Heights began its half-inning with consecutive singles by Sam Wahl and Luke Thesier. Cole Meyer then drew a walk to load the bases.
After an out, Reel came up to the plate and sent a 3-2 pitch into left field. That got Wahl home and gave the Huskies the win.
“Gabe Reel…what more can I say?” said Heights coach JR Moffatt. “For a guy who really hasn’t been a pitcher since he was younger, I can’t imagine being put into a more difficult situation. After catching a full game for the fourth straight day he goes in and takes off the gear and goes to the mound with us on the ropes.
“The thing I know that I’m gonna get with Gabe is that he’s gonna throw strikes. He’s very accurate whether he’s throwing bases as a catcher or throwing from the mound. You can’t overstate the importance of location of pitches. For Gabe to be able to secure his first high school pitching win by driving in the RBI to seal it is a very special thing.”
Prairie opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning. The Huskies got on the board in the second when Evan Warner’s RBI groundout sent Ike Peterson home. Heights took the lead in the fourth inning when Sam Fulton scored on an error.
The Huksies added two more runs in the fifth inning. Alex Roth singled, then was sent home by a Thesier double. Thesier would score on an error during the next at-bat.
Peterson and Thesier both finished the game 2-for-3. Meyer pitched five innings and struck out six. Reel pitched the seventh, which gave him the win.
Heights is 8-5 and will play at Lewis Cass on Tuesday.
