Baseball roundup: Tigers beat Westfield to clinch conference series

Fishers rode a dominating effort from Grant Richardson to a 6-0 win at Westfield Saturday in the final game of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference series between the teams. The Tigers won the series 2-1.
Richardson totaled 12 strikeouts in the game and issued no walks. The Class 4A No. 6 Tigers got on the board in the first inning, with JJ Woolwine scoring on Kiel Brenczewski’s RBI groundout. Fishers added two runs in the fifth inning: Ben Burton scored on an error, then Craig Yoho tagged up and went home after Richardson hit a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers scored twice in the sixth inning, with Alex Jamieson smacking a right field double to send Matt Wolff home. Tristan Baker came in to courtesy run for Jamieson, and he would eventually score on Jack Roudebush’s RBI line drive. Yoho scored for Fishers in the seventh run, on a fielder’s choice by Wolff.
Yoho finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Richardson and Woolwine both hit one double.
Logan McClurg, Matthew Meyer and Trey Anderson each had one hit for the Shamrocks. Meyer pitched six innings, striking out five.
Fishers is 19-7 overall and sits at 12-3 in the conference, behind Zionsville’s 13-2 record. The two teams will play each other in an HCC series this weekend. But first, the Tigers will play at Columbus North on Monday.
Westfield finished HCC play 8-10 and is 11-12 overall. The ‘Rocks will host Kokomo on Monday.

Millers take care of Bulldogs

Noblesville honored its seniors in the best way possible on Saturday: A dominating win.
The Millers beat Brownsburg 13-3 in five innings at Don Dunker Field, completing a Hoosier Crossroads Conference sweep of the Bulldogs. Noblesville scored in each inning, including six runs in the third.
Tyler Owens drew a bases-loaded walk to get the inning’s first run, sending in Bryce Randolph. Cooper Miles hit a two RBI single to drive in Camden Nagel and Zac Tuinei. Then, Jacob Thieman stepped up and smacked a three-RBI triple, getting Tyler Owens, Miles and DJ Owens home.
Thieman finished the game with four RBIs. DJ Owens was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3, including two doubles. He drove in three runs. Tyler Owens and Miles both scored three runs.
Jackson Ramey got the win, pitching four and a third innings.
The Millers are 8-7 in the conference and 17-10 overall. Noblesville begins its final HCC series of the year on Wednesday at Avon. The Orioles are also 8-7 in the league.

‘Blazers cruise at Lutheran doubleheader

University easily won both games of a doubleheader at Lutheran on Saturday.
In the first game, the Trailblazers cruised 19-2 in six innings. Cade Carlson led the way on the mound with 13 strikeouts and no walks.
Garrett Hill hit two home runs for University as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Hill smacked his first homer for three runs in the fourth inning, and his second home run for two runs in the sixth inning. Asher Thompson followed that up with a two-run homer in the sixth.
Kolton Stevens went 4-for-5 at the plate. Dawson Estep, Thompson and Tyler Galyean also had three hits. Hill totaled five RBIs for the game, with Estep, Ryan Williams and Thompson driving in three runs each. Estep, Hill, Thompson and Galyean scored three runs each.
In the second game, University won 10-1. Hill scored the Trailblazers’ first run in the top of the first inning with – what else? – a home run. The Saints tied it up in the bottom of the inning with their own homer.
University took the lead for good in the third inning. Hill batted in Estep with a center field hit, then Galyean’s RBI groundout got Hill home. In the third inning, Estep doubled in Ryan Williams, then Hill stepped up and cracked his second homer of the game, and fourth of the day, getting both himself and Estep in to score.
The ‘Blazers wouldn’t let up in the seventh inning: Estep sent a two-run homer over the right field fence, with Williams also scoring. Later, Galyean got on base with a triple, and Ben Ewer sent him home with a home run.
Estep and Hill both finished with three hits and three runs scored. Zach Janssen pitched four innings, striking out nine, while Hill tossed six strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings on the mound.
University is 18-5 and plays at Cardinal Ritter on Monday.

Royals edge Guerin Catholic in eight innings

It took eight innings, but Hamilton Southeastern was able to squeeze past Guerin Catholic 1-0 in a Saturday game at the Golden Eagles’ field.
The Royals scored when Zach Boyle got home on an error in the eighth inning. Southeastern had six hits in the game. Rutger Poiry pitched the first six innings, striking out four, with Tyler Schweitzer throwing the final two innings to get the win.
Guerin Catholic had seven hits, including a 2-for-3 effort from Owen Hargrave. Brendan Downey hit a double. Jake Andriole pitched seven and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts.
Southeastern is 10-14 and plays at Lawrence North on Monday. The Golden Eagles are 9-11 and host Hamilton Heights on Monday.
