Golden Eagles overwhelm South Spencer
Guerin Catholic ran away from South Spencer in the final two innings, winning 13-2 in a Friday night game at Jasper.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the top of the first inning, as Keenan Taylor got home on Nate Bingman’s RBI groundout. Sam Lewandowski led off the second inning with a home run, making the score 2-0 for Guerin. In the fourth inning, Max Engelking got on base with a double, then was batted in by a double from Josh Schaaf.
South Spencer scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut GC’s lead to 3-1, but the Golden Eagles stopped any comeback with five runs in the sixth inning. Engelking doubled home Braden Reel, then Schaaf hit a right field triple to bring in Engelking. Wes Gingerich batted in Schaaf. Later, Gingerich scored on a balk, then Bennett Ely singled home Taylor.
Guerin Catholic added five more runs in the seventh inning. Gingerich’s center field double scored Reel and Engelking, then Taylor doubled home Gingerich. Bingman hit – guess what? – another double to get Gingerich and Taylor home.
The Golden Eagles totaled seven doubles for the game, including two from Engelking, who finished the game with three hits. Reel also had three hits. Lewandowski pitched a complete game for the win.
Guerin Catholic is 15-2 and plays Jasper at 11 a.m. today.

Tigers finish Avon series with two wins
Fishers started its Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Avon on Wednesday, but wound up getting two wins against the Orioles on Friday.
Game 1 of the series began on Wednesday in Fishers before being suspended by rain, with the Tigers leading 9-3 in the top of the fourth inning. The game resumed Friday night at Avon, and Fishers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to finish the game with a 13-3 win. Kaid Muth singled home Nick Lukac for the final run.
Muth led the Tigers with three hits and two RBIs. Grant Whetsel and Daniel Owens each contributed two RBIs and a single. JP Preston added an RBI and a single. JJ Woolwine was on base three times and scored all three times. Lukac was on base three times as well and scored twice. Together, the Tigers stole six bases in the game.
Anthony Castellani (1-3) started the game and pitched three innings on Wednesday to earn his first win of the season. Cory Wolter pitched two innings of relief, retiring six of the seven batters he faced, including two strikeouts. Castellani and Wolter combined to hold the Orioles to just two hits.
Fishers swept the series by winning Game 2 4-1.
“While the Tigers scored lots of runs in Game 1, the formula for Game 2 was outstanding pitching to go with timely hitting,” said Fishers coach Matthew Cherry.
Tristan Baker (3-1) earned the victory on the mound as he pitched his second complete game in as many starts. Baker allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out five.
The Tigers scored in the third inning when Woolwine scored on Kiel Brenczewski’s RBI groundout. With two outs and the Tigers leading 1-0 in the fifth, Lukac and Brenczewski executed a double steal to put runners at second and third. Daniel Owens followed with a two-run single to left field.
Whetsel would give the Tigers a 4-0 lead with an RBI hit by pitch in the sixth inning. The Orioles would score their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game finished when Lukac made “a great play on a slow roller,” said Cherry. The play stopped a scoring threat by Avon.
Fishers is now 5-5 in the conference and 10-12 overall. The Tigers host defending Class 1A state champion Daleville on Monday.

‘Rocks fall to Eagles in Game 2 (updated)
Westfield dropped the second game of its Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Zionsville on Friday, falling 4-0 in a home game.
The Shamrocks had eight hits. Payton Tamm had two doubles, with Trey Anderson and Bryce Dorton also getting two hits.
“We had a few opportunities, but just couldn’t get the big hit,” said Shamrocks coach Ryan Bunnell. “We made several mental mistakes that contributed to our lack of production tonight. It’s frustrating, we’re still struggling to find consistency. We’re making some of the same mistakes we made early in the season still and that’s preventing us from finding consistency. We have to find a way to eliminate those mistakes and become consistent with our productivity or we aren’t going anywhere in the tournament. This group has it in them, they just have to figure out how to be the same team every day.”
Westfield is 8-6 for the season. The Shamrocks’ Saturday game with Zionsville has been canceled due to the weather.
