The Noblesville baseball team split a pair of games at its own Miller Classic on Saturday.
In its first game, Noblesville beat Terre Haute North 3-1. The Millers scored their first run in the third inning after Cooper Miles ran home on a wild pitch.
The Patriots tied the game in the top of the fifth, but Noblesville got the run back in the bottom of the inning; Miles scored again after DJ Owens reached on error. The Millers scored another run in the sixth inning. Bryce Randolph got home after Zac Tuinei reached on error.
Ryan Plummer got the win, pitching a complete game and allowing just two hits.
The Millers dropped the second game to Cincinnati St. Xavier 8-3. Noblesville scored the game’s first run in the second inning when Jacob Thieman hit a home run.
St. Xavier got two runs in the third inning to take the lead, and never trailed after that. Noblesville’s other runs came in the fourth inning, when Mark Goudy singled Miles home, and in the sixth inning, when Thieman scored on a wild pitch after getting on base with a triple.
Imel and Miles both hit a double for the Millers.
Noblesville is 10-9 and hosts Wapahani on Tuesday.
Shamrocks take care of Bulldogs
Westfield rolled past Brownsburg 12-2 in a five-inning Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Saturday at the Shamrocks’ field.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the third inning, but the ‘Rocks answered with three in the bottom of the third. Sam Eaton doubled in Logan McClurg and Matthew Meyer for the first runs, then Zach Collins smacked a triple to get Eaton home.
Westfield poured in seven runs in the fourth inning, including a two-RBI double for Meyer. In the fifth inning, Eaton hit his second double of the day and scored McClurg to make the score 11-2. Collins then got Meyer home on a sacrifice fly, and that finished the game.
Meyer was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two. Eaton and Collins both finished with three RBIs, while McClurg scored three runs. Meyer pitched all five innings, striking out six.
The Shamrocks are 7-5 in the conference and 7-7 overall. They will play again Tuesday at Pendleton Heights.
Carmel sweeps Ben Davis in MIC doubleheader
Carmel swept a Metropolitan Conference doubleheader at Ben Davis on Saturday.
The Greyhounds won the first game 4-2. Carmel got ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Will Richter hit a single to score JD Rogers, then Richter scored later on a fielder’s choice, with Evan Petruzzi getting the RBI. Jack Van Remortel scored the third run on an error.
The ‘Hounds scored their fourth run in the third inning, with Drew Kelly getting home on a Jackson Adams single. Adams and Rogers both were 2-for-4 at the plate.
Aiden Bradbury pitched four innings for the win, with Richter going three innings for the save. Both pitchers allowed just three hits each.
In the second game, Carmel won 11-5. The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the first two innings (Carmel was the designated home team). Kelly doubled home Rogers and Van Remortel in the first inning, then Brooks hit a two-RBI double in the second to send Adams and Brayden Lentz in to score.
The Giants scored five runs in the top of the third to take the lead, but the ‘Hounds scored five in the bottom of the inning. Lentz singled in Drew Olssen; Brooks’ left field single scored Lentz and Jared Greene, Richter batted Rogers in with a single and Van Remortel hit a sacrifice fly to get Brooks home.
Richter got an RBI groundout in the fifth inning to score Greene. Lentz batted in Olssen again in the sixth inning with a right field single. Lentz finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, while Brooks totaled four RBIs.
Zach Vogt pitched the win, going five and two thirds innings. Drew Harding got the save.
Carmel is 3-5 in the MIC and 5-10 overall. The ‘Hounds play at Lawrence Central on Tuesday to begin another conference series.
Golden Eagles cruise past Warren Centra
Guerin Catholic cruised to a 10-1 win over Warren Central Saturday at the Golden Eagles’ field.
Guerin got on the board in the third inning with five runs. Wes Gingerich got home on an error, Nate Bingman singled home Jake Andriole, then Sam Joyal’s right field single scored Luke Godfrey and Bingman. Owen Hargrave singled home Bennett Ely for the fifth run.
In the fifth inning, Gingerich singled into right field to score Ely, then Hargrave scored on an error. The Golden Eagles got six more runs in the sixth inning: Andriole began with a double, and he was sent home by a single from Nico Albert. Hargrave hit a sacrifice fly to score Albert, then Matt Parenteau’s single sent Max Engelking in for GC’s 10th run.
Gingerich and Keenan Taylor both had two hits. Sam Lewandowski pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just one hit.
The Golden Eagles are 7-5 and play at Mount Vernon on Monday.
University wins Heritage Christian Tournament
University won the Heritage Christian Tournament on Saturday.
In its first game, the Trailblazers held on to beat Blackhawk Christian 9-7. University started wtih two runs in the top of the first inning: Brock Moore’s triple scored Garrett Hill, then Moore was sent home by Cade Carlson’s single.
A second-inning double from Hill sent Dawson Estep home, and UHS led 3-0. Blackhawk scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the second, but the ‘Blazers stayed ahead with a fourth-inning run (Estep scored after Ben Ewer reached on error) and two fifth-inning runs (Ryan Williams scored on a passed ball, and Hill singled in Estep).
Blackhawk took a 7-6 lead after six innings, but two hits got University back up 9-7. Hill doubled home Ben Westerkamm and Williams, then Moore sent a single into right field to get Hill home. Hill then struck out the last two batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Hill finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Estep scored three runs. Ewer and Hillboth hit two doubles, and Williams had a double as well. Carlson pitched five and two-thirds innings, striking out seven.
In the second game, University beat Heritage Christian, the No. 1 team in Class 2A, 9-5. The Trailblazers never trailed, going up 2-0 in the first inning when Moore hit a right field homer. Hill also scored.
Moore singled in Hill in the third inning to put UHS up 3-0. In the fourth inning, Estep doubled in two runs, scoring Asher Thompson and Williams. Moore and Carlson both scored fifth-inning runs on errors.
Estep stole home to add another University run in the sixth inning. Finally, Thompson scored in the seventh inning on an error. Moore and Thompson both were 3-for-4, with Thompson batting in three runs. Moore also pitched five and a third innings for the win.
University is 12-4 and hosts the Indianapolis Kings on Monday.
Tigers beat Avon, clinch HCC series
Fishers clinched a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Avon by beating the Class 4A No. 10 Orioles 5-2 in a Saturday home game.
The 4A No. 2 Tigers struck first in the bottom of the second. Kiel Brenczewski led off the inning with a single to left. After stealing second, Brenczewski advanced to third when Alex Jamieson reached first on an error. With two outs, Brenczewski scored when Daniel Owens reached on an error that would have ended the inning.
The Orioles answered right back with a run in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1. The Tigers took advantage of situational hitting to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Craig Yoho was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Brenczewski followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Matthew Wolff grounded out to the right side to plate Yoho and take the lead 2-1. Jamieson followed with an RBI single to score Brenczewski and extend the lead to 3-1.
The Orioles sparked a rally in the fifth inning off of reliever AJ Waltermann. The first batter reached on a hit by pitch. An out later, the Orioles singled and were hit by another pitch to load the bases. Although one run scored on a wild pitch, Waltermann proceeded to strikeout the next two Orioles to leave the runners stranded and maintain a 3-2 lead. Waltermann worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning and finished with three strikeouts in two innings of work.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers once again used situational hitting to score two insurance runs. Brenczewski led off the inning with a single, his third hit of the day. Wolff followed with a single. With runners on first and second and no outs, Jamieson laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position with one out. Pinch runner TJ Ratliff would score on a wild pitch, and Wolff scored on Owens’ sacrifice fly to left.
Wolff picked up his second save of the season pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning, striking out the last batter to end the game. Mason Thomas (2-0) earned the victory on the mound. Making his first conference start, Thomas struck out eight in four innings, while allowing two hits and one earned run. The only hiccup for Thomas was his six walks.
Brenczewski led the Tigers at the plate with his 3-for-3 effort. Ben Burton, Wolff, and Jamieson contributed one hit each. Wolff, Jamieson, and Owens had one RBI apiece.
The Tigers are 10-2 in the conference and 15-4 overall. Fishers returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Columbus East at 6 p.m.
HSE falls to Zionsville
Hamilton Southeastern lost a 5-1 Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at Zionsville on Saturday, giving the Eagles a sweep of the series.
The Royals scored their run in the seventh inning; Anthony Eggers got home after Cole DeWael reached on error. Jacob Daftari hit a second-inning double.
Rutger Poiry pitched five innings for Southeastern, striking out eight.
The Royals will begin another conference series, with Noblesville, on Thursday.
