Hamilton Heights won its second consecutive game Tuesday, holding off Northwestern 5-4 at the Huskies’ field.
While the win was nice, Heights coach JR Moffatt was happy with how his team won. The Huskies did so by doing the little things: Putting the ball in play, and avoiding strikeouts. Moffatt believed the most important stat of the night was that his team struck out only four times on Tuesday.
“I think tonight for us, it was the way we won,” said Heights coach JR Moffatt. “We’ve been striking out way too much. And tonight was the exact opposite.”
After the Tigers scored in the top of the first inning, the Huskies answered right away in the bottom of the first. Sam Fulton’s single got Sam Wahl in to score and Heights on the board at 1-1.
The Huskies extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Sam Rupe and Luke Stohler both singled to get on base, then Cobe Koors reached on error, and eventually all three scored.
Northwestern got two runs back in the fifth inning, then Heights added a run in the sixth when Alex Roth scored. The Tigers scored one more run with two outs in the seventh, but Koors caught a fly ball in center field to get the third out.
The Huskies totaled seven hits in the game, with Rupe going 2-for-3. Ike Peterson pitched a complete game, striking out seven.
Heights is now 6-4 for the season and will play at 5 p.m. today at Northwestern.
“This was a huge win for us because we have four games this week,” said Moffatt. “And Northwestern is really good. To get two games over .500 to start the season is just really big. And we’ll got to Northwestern tomorrow night. We’ll have Sam Fulton pitching. He’s a good pitcher, so we like our chances. Doesn’t mean we’ll win, but we like our chances.”
