Hamilton Heights went up to Tipton on Wednesday and came home with a 7-2 Hoosier Conference victory.
The Huskies broke through in the second inning, when Ike Peterson sent a home run into left field in the first at-bat. Drew Maynard hit a single and Luke Theiser walked, then Cole Meyer lifted a homer into left field to score three runs.
The Blue Devils scored twice in the third inning, but Heights answered both of those runs in the fourth. Sam Wahl’s single sent Theiser home, then Wahl scored later after tagging up on a Sam Fulton flyout. Fulton then hit a solo homer in the seventh inning.
Meyer and Wahl finished the game with two hits each. Peterson also got things done on the mound, striking out eight in a complete-game effort.
“Ike Peterson was terrific tonight,” said Huskies coach JR Moffatt. “I couldn’t be happier for him. He has struggled at the plate a little to start the season but the last couple of games he’s started to break out of it. For him to start the scoring tonight with a home run was in the second was terrific. He pitched an unbelievable game.”
While the Blue Devils began to hit Peterson in the third inning, Moffatt said he “never flinched.”
“He’s a pretty laid back guy,” said Moffatt. ” After the inning he came in and smiled at me and said ‘I’m good’, and he sure was. He locked me down the rest of the way. He only threw around 30 non-strikes the entire game.
“A big key for us in this series was 14 innings pitched an no walks. That’s pretty crazy really with the weather the way it’s been. Tipton has some good players and not giving them bases was huge.”
Heights is 2-2 in the conference and 4-3 overall. The Huskies will be back home on Saturday to play a doubleheader with Elwood.
“I can see our confidence starting to build,” said Moffatt. “It’s crazy how a couple of hits can do that. We all know that hitting can cure a lot of woes. Maybe just maybe with the warming of the weather our bats are coming out of the slumber of hibernation. We’ve got some big bats, if we get them all going it could be pretty fun to watch.”
