Baseball roundup: HSE overwhelms Pike

Hamilton Southeastern opened play at its own Royal Classic on Friday by overwhelming Pike in five innings, 16-1.
The Royals scored one run in each of the first two innings. Colin St. Clair drew a bases-loaded walk to send Noah Wolf home for Southeastern’s first run, then Jason Dettman hit a second-inning single to score Griffin Haas.
The Royals got their offense going in the third inning, scoring six runs. J. Bush hit a two-RBI double, then Wolf singled in two runs. Hunter Dilts followed that with his own two-run double.
Southeastern continued to roll in the fourth innings, pouring in eight runs. The Royals hit five straight RBI singles, including a two-RBI hit from Wolf. Haas, Dettman, Dilts and J.T. Mutchner all batted in one run with their hits. Garrett Dettman drew a bases-loaded walk and Peyton Lusby was then hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded.
Wolf totaled four RBIs for the game, with Dilts driving in three. Bush had three hits, including two doubles. Ty Bradle pitched three innings for the win.
The Royals are 1-0-1 and play two more games at their Classic today, hosting DeKalb at 10 a.m. and McCutcheon at 7 p.m.

University opened its season on Friday with two wins over Kentucky teams at the Super Prep 2021 Tournament.
In their first game, the Trailblazers beat Pikeville 11-4 in five innings. University scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, starting with two runs when Adam Oxley reached on error. Seth Hogg then batted in Matt Moore on a sacrifice fly.
Pikeville came back to tie the game in the top of the second, but University scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Hooker scored on an error. The score stayed at 4-3 until the fourth inning, when the ‘Blazers erupted for seven runs.
Galyean hit an RBI single for the first run, then Hogg sent home two runs with a left field hit. University loaded the bases, then Grady Hay drew a walk to bring in Oxley. Finally, Hooker blasted a triple into center field to score three runs.
Hooker went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in three more. Hogg also had three RBIs. Galyean and Moore both scored twice. Moore also got the pitching win, going four innings and striking out seven.
University had to come from behind to win the second game, but did so over Louisville Ballard 5-4.
The Trailblazers scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Thomas Price got home on a wild pitch. Ballard scored twice to take the lead in the bottom of the second, both times hitting an RBI single.
Moore got his own RBI hit in the third inning, sending in Hogg to tie the game at 2-2. But Ballard added two runs, one each in the third and fourth innings, to take a 4-2 lead.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, University rallied. Weber Morse got on base with a double, then Hooker drew a walk after the ‘Blazers absorbed a strikeout. Galyean then hit a single to score Morse. Moore was next, and his left field hit sent Hooker and Hogg home.
Ballard threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting runners at second and third with no outs. But University held firm, getting fielder’s choices for the next two outs, then Moore made a catch at right field to end the game.
Moore totaled three RBIs, while Owen Schellhase was 2-for-3 at the plate. Hay got the win in relief, with Oxley pitching the seventh inning for the save.
The Trailblazers are 2-0 and play Lafayette (Ky.) and North Oldham today.

Hamilton Heights dropped two games at the DeMarini Tennessee Tournament on Friday.
The Huskies dropped their first game 13-1 against Hardin Valley Academy. Heights scored its run in the fourth inning when Drew VanOeveren singled in Erik Malott. Brayden Elkin and Malott also got one hit.
In their second game of the day, the Huskies lost to Bearden 11-3. Heights scored its first run in the second inning, with VanOeveren getting home after Isaac Tuma reached on error. The Huskies then got two solo home runs in the later stages of the game, one from Nate Hulen in the sixth inning and one from Guy Griffey in the seventh.
Sam Allen also hit a seventh-inning double, one of his two hits. Brayden Elkin threw four innings of relief, striking out nine.
Heights is 0-3 and plays Christian Academy of Knoxville this morning.
