Baseball roundup: Golden Eagles prove they’re better eagles, Carmel surges to beat Roncalli, Fishers sweeps Franklin Central, Sheridan cruises past Tipton at home

The Guerin Catholic baseball team won a road game 7-2 Friday at Zionsville.

Both teams scored two runs in the third inning. The Golden Eagles’ AJ Nunley batted in Tate Troxell for their first run, then Grant Beard got home on an error.

Guerin Catholic pulled ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning when Troxell singled Bryson Dorsey home. The Golden Eagles then scored four runs in the sixth: Davis Wagner doubled Nolan Ratcliff home, then Troxell smacked a double to bring in Wagner. Beard’s center field hit scored Troxell, then Beard got home when Karson Smith reached on error.

Troxell, Beard and Ratcliff all had two hits. Ryan Zimmerman pitched six innings for the win.

Guerin Catholic is 16-4 and plays a doubleheader at Greenfield-Central this afternoon.

Carmel used a sixth-inning surge to win a 9-7 game at Roncalli on Friday.

The Royals scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Both teams got one run in the second inning; John Zangrilli hit a sacrifice bunt to score Parker Heaney for the Greyhounds’ first run.

Roncalli led 3-1 after two innings, but Heaney tied the game with a two-run double in the top of the third, bringing in JD Stein and Tyler Walkey. The Royals put up three runs in the bottom of the third to go back up 6-3.

Stein singled in Zangrilli for a fourth inning run, and Roncalli scored in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-4 advantage. The Hounds jumped ahead 8-7 with four runs in the sixth inning: Walkey doubled in Silas Neal and Joe Cunningham, then Heaney sent Stein and Walkey home with a two-run single.

Stein batted in Zangrilli again in the seventh inning to complete the Carmel scoring. Stein and Walkey both had three hits, including a double for Walkey. Heaney totaled four RBIs on two hits. Nathan Koebcke went four and two-thirds innings for the win.

Carmel is 11-9 and plays Evansville North this afternoon at Bloomington North.

Fishers completed an HCC sweep of Franklin Central Friday with a 2-1 win at the Flashes’ field.

The Tigers scored both of their runs in the first inning. Ben Hammond tripled in Huston Dunn, then scored when Noah McPeek reached on error.

After that, the game belonged to Gavin Kuzniewski. He retired 18 of the last 19 batters he faced to get the win, striking out nine along the way. Jack Brown had two hits, including a double.

Fishers is 9-3 in the conference and 19-7 overall. The Tigers play Monday at Columbus North.

Sheridan got going in the later innings of its game with Tipton on Thursday, cruising past the Blue Devils 13-7 in a home game.

Tipton led 5-0 midway through the third inning before the Blackhawks got on the board in the bottom of the third. Jack Oland blasted a triple to bring in Zach Bales, then scored on a passed ball to cut the Blue Devils’ lead to 5-2.

Tipton added two runs in the top of the fourth and led 7-2. Sheridan got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Dayne Voege batted in Chance Spencer with a left field hit.

The Blackhawks took over in the fifth inning, putting up seven runs to take a 10-7 lead. Bales scored on a wild pitch, then Cole Mackintosh went home after a pitcher’s balk. Oland scored on a wild pitch for the second time to get Sheridan within 7-6.

The Hawks loaded the bases, and Voege struck again, sending a base hit into right field to score Chance Spencer and Camden Spencer. Gavin Schwerdtfeger got home on Caleb Alexander’s RBI groundout, then Voege scored on a passed ball.

Sheridan wasn’t done yet, adding three runs in the sixth. Chance Spencer’s right field hit brought in Camden Spencer and Oland, then Chance Spencer later scored on a passed ball.

Chance Spencer finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, while Voege, Bales and Oland all had two hits. Clinton Slopsema went five innings for the pitching win.

The Blackhawks are 10-8 and play this morning at Madison-Grant.

Hamilton Heights fell to Lafayette Central Catholic 14-5 Thursday in the Hoosier Conference third-place game.

The Huskies scored all five of their runs in the first inning. Phoenix Vondersaar led off with a walk, then moved to second base on a Dean Mason single. Nick Hulen came up next and blasted a triple to left field, scoring them both.

John Irion sent Hulen home with a right field hit. Dillon Pitts got on base with a single, moving Irion to third base, and they both scored when Kyle Michael smacked a base hit into left field.

Heights led 5-0, but the Knights slowly chipped away at the lead, getting within 5-3 after four innings. Central Catholic then took the lead by scoring five runs in the sixth inning and put up six more in the seventh inning.

Irion, Pitts and Michael all had two hits, including a double for Michael. Hulen went five and a third innings, striking out six.

The Huskies are 11-11 and officially place fourth in the conference. Heights travels to Anderson this morning for a doubleheader with the Indians.
