Huskies split doubleheader at Elwood
Hamilton Heights split a doubleheader at Elwood on Saturday.
The Huskies lost the first game 9-2. Heights scored its first run in the top of the first inning, when Gabe Reel’s RBI groundout scored Sam Wahl.
Elwood tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. The Huskies knotted the score back up at 2-2 with back to back doubles: Alex Roth got on base with one to left field, then Luke Theiser also went to left field to get Roth home.
The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back, then ran away with the game by scoring six runs in the sixth. Drew Fryman hit a double for Heights in the top of the seventh, but Elwood went 1-2-3 to end the game.
“We just were not very good offensively in that first game,” said Huskies coach JR Moffatt. “We for whatever reason sometimes become very passive at the plate. I’m not sure why since we have the ability to hit the ball. Elwood was the exact opposite of us today. Tough gritty hitters. Not an easy out in their lineup. Fouling off pitches, putting the ball in play, hitting it to the opposite field. Just a great job by them with the bats in game 1, they deserved the win. There is a reason why they are 7-2 and Madison County champs, they are a really solid group.”
The Huskies regrouped and won the second game 9-4. Heights started with one run each in the first two innings: Reel doubled in Cole Meyer for the first run, then Meyer singled home Theiser for the second score.
The Huskies took off for six runs in the fourth inning. Theiser scored after Wahl reached on error, then Reel cracked a home run to left field, scoring himself, Meyer and Wahl. Ike Peterson’s left field single got Sam Fulton home later in the inning, then Evan Warner singled in Fryman.
Fulton batted in the last Huskies run in the seventh inning; his right field single scored Wahl. Meyer and Reel both finished with three hits; Reel totaled four RBIs. Meyer pitched five innings for the win, striking out four.
“We responded really well in the second game,” said Moffatt. “I wasn’t really sure what we would get from our guys after a between game ‘pep talk’ where I expressed to them my less than thrilled feelings about what I perceive as a lack of toughness and passion. We could have easily packed it in after I got after them but they showed some character and heart and played much better in Game 2. Consistency in that is what we need now, if we come out and fight everyday like it’s the last game we will ever play we will be fine. This is a big week coming up for us, a chance to play a lot and hopefully string together some wins.”
Heights is 5-4 and hosts Northwestern on Tuesday for a Hoosier Conference game.

Carlson pitched five and two-thirds innings for the win, striking out eight.
The ‘Blazers came from behind to win the second game 6-5. Seton scored the first two runs, before University got on the board in the third inning when Moore doubled in Ben Ewer.
Seton led 5-1 through four innings, but University cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth. Williams and Estep scored after Ewer reached on error, then Ewer was sent home on Carlson’s sacrifice fly. The Trailblazers then took the lead in the sixth inning, when Ewer’s two-RBI single sent Thompson and Williams home.
