Baseball: ‘Rocks beat Royals in Game 1 of series

Westfield won the first game of a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Hamilton Southeastern Thursday, 4-2 at the Shamrocks’ field.
Westfield got on the board first with two runs in the second inning, as Jack Lawrence singled in Kyle Pepiot and Quentin Markle. The Royals got a run back in the top of the sixth; Cole DeWael got on base with a triple, and stole home.
But Lawrence struck again in the bottom of the inning, smacking a double to bring in Pepiot and Payton Tamm. Matt Buckingham batted another run in for Southeastern in the seventh, with a single to score Tyler Rhoades, who was courtesy running for Jack DeWolf after he hit a double.
Westfield close the game with three straight outs after that, including two strikeouts from Parker Bard, who pitched a complete game. Bard finished with 11 strikeouts.
“Parker Bard was really good for us tonight,” said Shamrocks coach Ryan Bunnell. “He had a good tempo and pounded the zone with all of his pitches.”
Tamm was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Lawrence went 2-for-3 and drove in all four Westfield runs.
The ‘Rocks and the Royals are tied atop the HCC standings with 7-4 records. The two teams will play each other again tonight at HSE’s Ken Seitz Field to conclude the series, with first pitch at 6 p.m.
