Carmel finally got to play its second game of the season Friday, as the Greyhounds hosted Mooresville at Hartman Field.
Carmel fell to the Pioneers 8-6. Both teams hit a home run in the first inning; Nathan MacLaren smacked a center field homer for the ‘Hounds. Carmel then led 2-1 after Dan Cunningham hit a left field double to score JD Stein.
But Mooresville took over in the third inning, scoring five runs to lead 6-2. Carmel got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third; MacLaren scored on Cody Kantz’s RBI groundout, then Hunter Snow got home on Griffin Wolf’s RBI groundout.
Wolf’s RBI groundout scored Snow again in the fifth inning, then Stein scored in the sixth inning on Adam Buczkowski’s sacrifice fly. That got Carmel within 7-6, but the Pioneers added a run in the top of the seventh for the final score of the game.
“We didn’t throw enough strikes and we didn’t play catch,” said Greyhounds coach Matt Buczkowski. “You can’t walk eight hitters and make two errors against a good ball club and expect to win.”
MacLaren and Cunningham both had two hits; Cam Carmichael and Wolf each hit a double. Noah Bradbury went two and two-thirds innings, striking out four. Buczkowski also tossed four strikeouts.
Carmel is 0-2 and plays tonight at Noblesville.
