Baseball: Millers beat Greyhounds at Victory Field

Noblesville got some big early hits, then held off a furious Carmel rally to win 4-3 Friday night at Victory Field as part of the Victory Field Classic.
The Millers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Thieman drew a walk, then Reese Sharp came up and hit a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a home run. Noblesville led 2-0.
The Millers added two runs in the fifth inning when DJ Owens doubled into left field. Tyler Owens and Mark Goudy both scored.
The Greyhounds began their rally in the sixth inning. Jared Greene scored the first run when Will Richter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. JD Rogers was the next to score after Jack Van Remortel drew a walk. Kade Gorman struck out the next batter, then the Millers got a double play to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, Luke Barnes got on base for Carmel with a double, then scored when Greene reached on error. But Noblesville held on, with Gorman getting a strikeout to end the game.
Clay Holzworth pitched five innings for the Millers, striking out seven and getting the win. Gorman struck out three in two innings and is credited with the save. Both pitchers only allowed one hit.
Tanner Simmons had Carmel’s other hit, in addition to Barnes’ double.
Noblesville is 9-8 and hosts its own Miller Classic today. Noblesville plays Terre Haute North at 11 a.m., with another game to be played this evening. The Greyhounds are 3-10 and play a Metropolitan Conference doubleheader today at Ben Davis.
