Slow and steady won the race for Hamilton Heights on Tuesday.
The Huskies got down very early to backyard rival Tipton, but kept chipping away at the Blue Devils’ lead throughout the game. That eventually led Heights to a 7-5 win in a Hoosier Conference game.
The Huskies scored their first run in the top of the first inning, when Sam Fulton doubled in Brody Piel. But Tipton poured in four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Heights scored one run in each of the first four innings. Sam Allen batted in Andrew VanOeveren in the second, Fulton scored after Alex Hewitt reached by error in the third, and Lucas Letsinger batted in Allen in the fourth inning to tie the game.
The Blue Devils scored in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-4. The Huskies tied the game in the sixth when Luke Stohler doubled in Fulton. Heights finally got in front for good in the seventh inning: Allen scored on a wild pitch, and Erik Malott singled home Luke Thesier.
Allen finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Letsinger got the win in relief, pitching the final three innings. Dylan Zachary threw the first four innings, striking out five.
“We did some things well tonight but to a player know that we were far from perfect,” said Heights coach JR Moffatt. “Several plays that we didn’t make that we have been making. I was really happy with our work at the plate. Just a better job all around fighting every at bat and putting the ball in play. Tipton made several key defensive plays to keep us away from the big innings. We just chipped away all game with a run here and a run there. The only inning we didn’t score in was the fifth and I think if it wasn’t for a missed sign we probably score there too. That was a really, really good thing for us.
“Defensively we were off a little but good teams find a way to get wins when they aren’t at their best. I was happy for Lucas Letsinger to be able to come in and throw three shutout innings to get his first varsity win. He did a great job there and had a key RBI hit as well.”
Heights will host Tipton at 5 p.m. tonight to complete the conference series. Fulton will get the start for the Huskies, who are now 1-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall.

‘Rocks beat Carmel in all-county game, ‘Hounds rebound against Pike
Westfield took control in the second inning to win an all-county baseball game 6-5 at Carmel’s Hartman Field on Monday.
The Shamrocks scored one run in the top of the first inning. Trey Anderson hit a double to get on base, and Bryce Dorton hit his own double to send Anderson home. The Greyhounds responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning; Jackson Adams hit a left field single to send Christian Williams and Logan Urbanowski in to score.
But Westfield grabbed the lead right back with five runs in the second inning. Luke Hutson singled in Kyle Pepiot and Eli Patchett to put the ‘Rocks back up front. Later, Dorton hit his second double of the game, scoring Hutson and Anderson. Tyler Smitherman followed that up with a double to send Dorton home.
Carmel continued to battle, scoring a run in the fourth inning. Alex Brooks scored on Drew Olssen’s RBI groundout. The Greyhounds added two more runs in the sixth inning. Adams led off with a double, then Brooks sent a double into left field to send Adams home. Brooks scored later in the inning on a fielder’s choice from Olssen.
The Shamrocks finished the game with Parker Bard throwing three straight strikeouts. Bard is credited with the save. Smitherman got the win, tossing five strikeouts in four innings. Josh Stegner relieved him for two innings, before Bard came in.
“Tyler Smitherman gave us a solid outing today, definitely one to build on,” said Westfield coach Ryan Bunnell. “He has a lot of room for growth but he showed us what he can do and, more importantly, what we need him to do. Stegner gave us solid relief again to bridge to Bard, who I thought gave us a great inning when we needed it. Probably his best ‘stuff’ so far this year. Bryce Dorton had big hits for us tonight, we have been producing offensively.”
Anderson and Dorton both had two hits, while Zach Collins hit a fifth-inning double. Adams and Brooks finished the game with two hits each.
On Tuesday, Carmel beat Pike 17-0 in a nine-inning Metropolitan Conference game. The Greyhounds scored six runs in the first and fourth innings.
Six different Greyhounds had two hits each: Olssen, Brayden Lentz, Adams, Dryden Schroeder, Brooks and Williams. Schroeder totaled four RBIs for the night. Brooks, Schroeder, Williams and Cody Li all hit doubles. Olssen pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing only one hit.
Westfield is 5-2 and will play tonight at Fishers in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game; the game was moved up from Thursday due to weather. Carmel is 5-5, 2-1 in the MIC, and hosts Pike at 5:30 p.m. tonight to complete the conference series.

Royals roll past Avon
Hamilton Southeastern rolled past Avon 13-4 in a Tuesday Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.
The Royals got on the board in the first inning when Matthew Buckingham hit a solo home run. The Orioles took a 2-1 win lead in the bottom of the inning, but Michael Cherry tied it up for Southeastern by scoring on a passed ball.
The Royals then lit up the scoreboard for eight runs in the third inning. Greyson Droste doubled home Brayton Harrison, then later scored by error. Matt Iacobucci hit a single to send Jordan Millikan, then Cherry was sent home by Anthony Eggers’ double.
Iacobucci scored on a wild pitch, then Jake Hutson hit a sacrifice fly to send Eggers in. Droste later hit his second double of the inning, which scored Buckingham and Harrison.
Southeastern scored another run in the fifth inning, with Harrison’s RBI fielder’s choice getting Hutson home. Tyler Rhoades hit a two-RBI single in the sixth inning to score Cam Bolling and Caden Ruhnow.
Droste was 4-for-5 at the plate, while Buckingham hit 3-for-5. Michael Dillon pitched five innings for the win, striking out eight.
The Royals are 5-3 and host Avon at 6 p.m. tonight to complete the HCC series.

‘Blazers start week with split
University split a pair of games to begin the week.
On Monday, the Trailblazers beat Western Boone 16-6 in a five-inning away game. University scored in all five innings. Adam Oxley hit a two-RBI double in the first inning, while Dawson Estep hit a double in the fourth inning.
Oxley and Tyler Galyean both totaled three RBIs, while Estep had three hits and scored four runs. Alex Washlock, Nate Shatkowski and Ben Westerkamm all scored three runs. Jacob Lange pitched four innings for the win, striking out seven.
On Tuesday, the ‘Blazers fell to Lewis Cass 4-3. University scored its first run in the third inning, when Washlock got home after Estep reached on error.
The Trailblazers took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Estep singled in Washlock, then Galyean scored after Shatkowski hit a sacrifice fly. The Kings scored two runs in the seventh inning to get the win.
University is 3-5-1 and plays at 5 p.m. today at Shortridge.

Tigers drop slugfest with MV
Fishers played in another slugfest game on Tuesday, but once again fell short, losing to Mount Vernon 13-11. The Tigers are 2-3 in the past five games despite scoring 50 runs on 57 hits in those games.
Fishers was in a 9-0 hole heading into the fifth inning. Of the nine runs allowed, four were unearned runs coming from three Tigers defensive errors.
In the fifth inning, the Fishers bats came back to life. With one out, Charlie Walker and Nick Lukac worked back-to-back walks. Colin Shelton scored Walker with an RBI double to left field. JJ Woolwine followed with a walk to load the bases.
Kiel Brenczewski delivered a two-strike, two-run single past a diving shortstop to make the score 9-3. Kaid Muth was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. After the second out in the inning, Dominic Oliverio and Grant Whetsel worked back-to-back RBI walks to draw the Tigers within four runs. With the bases still loaded, JP Preston connected on a pinch-hit two-run double past a diving first baseman. Lukac followed on the next pitch with a two-run double to tie the game at 9-9.
The Marauders answered right back in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs to take the lead 13-9. “However, the Tigers continued to show the fight they have displayed all season,” said Tigers coach Matt Cherry.
Woolwine led off the sixth inning with a double. One out later, Muth drove a deep ball over the centerfielder’s head for an RBI triple. Daniel Owens kept the inning going with an RBI single to score Muth and make the score 13-11, but the Tigers hopes ended there as they were unable to score any more runs in the final inning.
Drew Louden started on the mound for the Fishers and gave up five earned runs on eight hits in four innings. Louden struck out three. Mason Sweeney (1-1) suffered the loss in relief. Sweeney threw two innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits.
The Tigers begin their next Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Westfield at 6 p.m. tonight at home. This game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was moved up with the anticipated rain and cold forecast Thursday into Friday. After Wednesday’s game, the Tigers will play two games at Westfield either Thursday night, Friday night, and/or Saturday afternoon.

Golden Eagles pick up conference victory
Guerin Catholic picked up another Circle City Conference victory on Tuesday, beating Brebeuf Jesuit 5-3 on the road.
The Golden Eagles scored their first run in the first inning, with Keenan Taylor scoring on Luke Godfrey’s RBI groundout. Godfrey doubled home Bennett Ely in the second inning to give GC a 2-0 lead, then singled in Ely in the fifth inning.
Braden Reel hit a sacrifice fly to send Godfrey home, making the score 4-0. Nate Bingman scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning for Guerin’s final run of the game.
Godfrey batted in three runs in a 2-for-4 night. Bingman and Taylor also hit doubles. Matt Parenteau pitched a complete game, striking out 12.
The Golden Eagles host Brebeuf at 5:30 p.m. tonight to complete the conference series.

Sheridan dropped a 7-0 Hoosier Heartland Conference game at Rossville on Tuesday.
The Blackhawks were held to four hits, one each from Jake O’Hara, Sean Speck, Cameron Hovey and Jake Vita. O’Hara pitched five innings, striking out four.
Sheridan is 5-2 and hosts Taylor on Thursday.
