Baseball: ‘Blazers, ‘Hounds get huge victories

University scored two overwhelming victories to start the week.
First, the Class 2A No. 4 Trailblazers beat Speedway 16-0 in a five-inning Monday game. University erupted for 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning, finishing with a three-run double by Seth Hogg.
Weber Morse was 3-for-3 and batted in six runs, including a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run single in the fifth. Thomas Price was 3-for-4 and scored three runs, while Cooper Burnett scored four runs.
Hogg got the pitching win, going five innings.
On Tuesday, the ‘Blazers cruised past Liberty Christian 10-0 in five innings. University scored three runs each in both the first and second innings, including an RBI double by Jasper Owens. The Trailblazers ended the game in the fifth inning when Grayson Knight hit a two-run single, scoring Jake Hooker and Zane Kampmeier.
Thomas Price threw four innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit.
University is 18-4 and hosts Cathedral this afternoon.

Carmel also picked up two big wins early this week.
The Greyhounds started with an 18-7 Monday victory at Mount Vernon. Carmel scored four runs in the first inning, then rolled through the middle innings, culminating with seven runs in the top of the sixth. JD Stein and Alvaro Rincon both hit RBI doubles, and Hunter Snow smashed a two-run home run for a 16-1 lead. The Marauders scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to avoid the run-rule, but the ‘Hounds added two more runs in the seventh, starting with a triple by Nathan Williams to score Griffin Wolf. Snow then singled in Williams.
Wolf also hit a triple. Snow, Tripp Schroeder and Wolf all had three hits, with Snow batting four runs, Schroeder driving in three and Wolf scoring four runs. Williams had three runs. Cam Heaney pitched three innings for the win, striking out seven.
Carmel returned home to Hartman Field on Tuesday, where it beat Warren Central 16-3 in five innings. The Greyhounds took care of this one early, scoring five runs in the first inning and seven more in the third.
Nathan MacLaren and Dan Cunningham both had three hits, with Cody Kantz and Wolf both scoring three runs. Carter Klein got the pitching win.
Carmel is 14-7 and hosts its own Greyhound Invitational on Saturday to finish the regular season.

Fishers dropped a tough home game on Monday, as Columbus North scored a comeback victory on the Tigers 8-7.
The Tigers got off to a great start, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first for a 6-1 lead. Jack Brown singled in Joey Brenczewski for the first run, then scored when Dom Oliverio reached on error. Gavin Clayton doubled in Jack Backofen and Oliverio, then Huey Dunn’s single sent JP Preston and Clayton home.
Backofen scored a second-inning run on an error, putting Fishers up 7-2. But the Bull Dogs kept chipping away at the lead, tying the game with three runs in the fifth inning, then getting the go-ahead run in the sixth.
Brown was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double. Cody Jones threw five strikeouts in four innings.
The Tigers are 20-6 and play a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at Brownsburg tonight.

Hamilton Heights lost a 6-3 game at Kokomo on Tuesday.
The Huskies scored all of their runs in the third inning. Dean Mason singled in Sam Allen for the first run, then Hulen stole home plate. Drew VanOeveren smacked a triple to send Kaleb Murray (running for Mason) home.
Heights is 12-6 and hosts Yorktown on Friday.

Sheridan fell to Rossville 4-1 in an away Hoosier Heartland Conference game on Tuesday.
The Hornets scored three runs in the first inning and held the lead from there. The Blackhawks scored in the seventh inning; Camden Spencer got on base with a double and eventually scored on an error.
Sheridan is 8-11 and hosts Tri-West today.
