Baseball: Blackhawks sweep Tri-Central

The Sheridan baseball team picked up a Hoosier Heartland Conference sweep of Tri-Central this week.
The Blackhawks won the first game Tuesday 11-4 at the Trojans’ field. Corbin Murray scored Sheridan’s first run on a wild pitch in the first inning.
The ‘Hawks then put up six runs in the second inning. Cole Bales and Camden Spencer both got home on an error, then Cameron Hovey tripled in Murray. Hovey later scored after Collin McNair reached on error, then Silas DeVaney and McNair got home on a wild pitch.
Murray and Gavin Reners both had three hits, with Murray scoring three runs. Hovey was 2-for-3 and hit an RBI double in the third inning. Bales pitched three and two-thirds innings for the win, striking out seven.
Sheridan finished the sweep at home on Wednesday by beating Tri-Central 10-2. The Blackhawks took control by scoring five runs in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI single by Preston Weir. Brentley Alexander drew a bases-loaded walk to score Reners, then Murray’s RBI fielder’s choice sent Weir home. Hovey and DeVaney both added an RBI single to finish the inning’s scoring.
Hovey, DeVaney and Reners all had two hits, with Weir driving in three runs and McNair scoring three. Murray pitched three innings for the win and Hovey struck out five in two and two-thirds innings of relief.
In a Monday HHC game, Sheridan fell to Delphi 17-2 in five innings. The Oracles scored 10 runs in the first inning to take control of the game.
The Blackhawks scored both of their runs in the first inning. McNair hit a sacrifice fly to send Murray home, then Zach Bales singled in Hovey.
Sheridan is 8-12 and plays at Tipton this afternoon.

Carmel nearly made a big comeback at Center Grove on Wednesday, but the Class 4A No. 3 Trojans were able to hold off the 4A No. 2 Greyhounds 9-8 in a Metropolitan Conference game.
Center Grove led 9-0 after three innings. Carmel got on the board in the fifth inning with three runs. JD Rogers singled in Alex Richter, then Daniel Cunningham scored on a wild pitch and Nick Mitchell got home on an error.
Evan Neukam led off the sixth inning with a home run, bringing the ‘Hounds within 9-4. In the seventh inning, Cody Kantz led off with a left field homer. Later, JD Rogers scored on a passed ball to get Carmel within 9-6.
Richter drew a walk to load the bases. Later, Reece Bellin scored on a passed ball and a pitcher’s balk sent Lleyton Lukowski home and the Greyhounds were within one run. But Center Grove got the third out to finish the game.
Kantz and Nathan MacLaren each had two hits.
Carmel is 18-2-1 and plays this evening at Harrison.

Guerin Catholic was swept by Roncalli this week in a Circle City Conference series.
On Tuesday, the Golden Eagles fell 4-2 in a home game. Both teams scored two runs in the fourth inning. Clay Patton got the first GC run, then Adam Novelen scored on Sam Tabor’s RBI groundout. The Royals scored one run each in the sixth and seventh inning to take the game.
Anthony Ferrucci had two hits for Guerin Catholic.
On Wednesday, the Golden Eagles dropped a 12-2 game in six innings on the Roncalli field. Guerin Catholic scored in the first inning when Patton hit a sacrifice fly to send Braden Reel home. The Royals scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead.
Aidan Morse hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Golden Eagles. Reel was 2-for-3 at the plate, with a triple and a double.
Guerin Catholic is 9-16 and plays Monday at Greencastle.

University, ranked No. 5 in 2A dropped a 4-1 game at 2A No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic on Tuesday.
The Trailblazers scored their run in the fourth inning when Jake Hooker singled home Adam Oxley. Hooker finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
University is 15-7 and hosts Cardinal Ritter this afternoon.
