On Dec. 14, the Westfield Lions Club held its annual Christmas dinner and program at the Friends Church on South Union Street. Approximately 80 Lions and guests attended the event, catered by Westfield High School’s “Foodies Rock” – students who are part of the school’s Culinary Arts program.

Part of the annual tradition also includes Westfield High School’s Signature Sound Choir performing for the Lions and their guests. This has been a part of the Lions’ Christmas program for over 10 years now. The choir’s fine arts teacher, Alison Wessel, directed the choir in several songs that resulted in a standing ovation.

Another tradition at the Club’s Christmas program is presenting deserving Lions with awards. This year Lions Larry Clarino and Bruce Bowman received “Outstanding Service Awards” for their work in launching the Westfield Lions Foundation (WLF), a 501(c)(3) organization. The president of the WLF, Lion Mike Birk, presented the awards to Larry and Bruce. The WLF was put together so that groups and individuals can make tax-deductible contributions to the Club.

Another award presented went to Dale McCullough, a 36-year Lion who was a part of the Club’s search for a new location when they had to move from their previous clubhouse in downtown Westfield. Dale’s “Progressive Melvin Jones Award” – the highest award in Lions Clubs International – is the second time he has received this recognition.

Another big part of the evening was induction of another new member, Steve Hall, which brings the roster up to 64 Lions. Lion Steve was inducted by Past District Governor Dan Wilcox and sponsored by Lion Mark Albright.

At each Christmas program Lions put donations envelopes on the Christmas tree at the meeting. At the end of the meeting the Club’s president announces the total and the organization receiving the donations. This year’s total donations set a record – $1,400! Lion President Rodney Benson presented the check to Andrea Carlisle of Hoosier Veterans and Families.

The Westfield Lions Club, located at 1101 E. 169th Street, has been serving the citizens of Westfield since 1930. They typically meet on the first and third Thursdays at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about the Club is welcome to attend.
