Kiwanis Club of Cicero launches patriotic program to uplift local youth
On a quiet summer morning, a gentle breeze ripples through rows of American flags lining the streets of Cicero and Arcadia. For residents, it’s a stirring display of national pride. But for the children of those close-knit communities, these flags represent something far more powerful: hope, opportunity, and a brighter future.
“Each flag, placed with care by the Kiwanis Club of Cicero, tells a story – of service, sacrifice, and love for country,” Club Member Todd Clevenger explained. “Together, they transform ordinary streets into avenues of honor, where neighbors pause, reflect, and feel part of something greater. It’s a powerful tradition that not only beautifies our towns but binds us together in shared gratitude and respect.”
The Kiwanis Club of Cicero has launched the Avenue of Flags program, a new initiative that transforms patriotic expression into life-changing support for local youth. For just $60 a year, individuals, families, and businesses can sponsor a flag that will be proudly installed on major holidays – Memorial Day, Independence Day, Patriot’s Day, Flag Day, and Veterans Day – by dedicated Kiwanis members and volunteers.
“This is about more than flags,” said Harry Metzler, chairman of the Avenue of Flags Committee. “It’s about showing kids that their community believes in them. Each flag helps fund free books, scholarships, school supplies, and leadership programs for children who need someone in their corner.”
The program is a deeply symbolic gesture. While the flags wave proudly in honor of country and community, the proceeds quietly empower the Kiwanis Club’s mission to serve children in Cicero and surrounding communities. For many families throughout our communities, the impact of Kiwanis programs is deeply personal. Something as simple as a new backpack, a free book to call their own, or a scholarship opportunity can make an enormous difference in a child’s life. These small gestures often arrive at just the right time – offering not only tangible support, but also the reassurance that someone in their community cares.
Knowing that each flag helps fund these meaningful moments brings the Avenue of Flags program full circle: a powerful symbol of pride on the outside, and quiet, life-changing generosity at its heart.
The Avenue of Flags program is more than a fundraiser. It’s a movement – an invitation to every citizen to take part in something bigger than themselves.
“We can’t change the whole world at once,” Metzler added. “But we can change the world for one child at a time. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
The Kiwanis Club is urging local residents, organizations, and businesses to join the effort. With each flag, a child’s chance at a better future becomes more tangible. And with every street lined in red, white, and blue, you send a powerful message: our children matter.
Flag sponsorships are now available. For $60 per year, participants receive flag installation and removal on five national holidays. All funds raised go directly to youth-focused programs in the community.
