Visitors soon will find it is even more fun to visit the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad’s Arcadia Depot, thanks to Remnant Coffee Shop and upcoming programs that include art, history, and caboose rides.

The railroad will offer the caboose rides on Thursday, June 30 during the Arcadia Farmers Market. Tickets are $5 for the 15-minute rides and can be purchased onsite during the Farmers Market.

The depot will be open for tours from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 30. Hamilton County Historian David Heighway will be on the newly renovated deck to sell and sign his book, Hidden History of Hamilton County.

Remnant’s $4,555 donation – in part, from tip money – was used recently to upgrade the decking around the Depot. The coffee shop also donated new benches positioned outside the depot. Both projects enhance visitor experiences and safety, said Nickel Plate Express Director Emily Reynolds.

“We are so blessed to have the Depot in Arcadia,” Long-time Remnant volunteer Keturah Long said. “It was an honor to get to be a part of keeping the Depot beautiful for the community. The history the Depot provides is invaluable for the generations to come and the partnership is very important to us.”

Long said the Remnant Coffee shop’s goal is to provide a third gathering space for the community, to partner with the town, and to be a seed of hope.

The Arcadia Depot, built in 1869, is original to the Nickel Plate Railroad and offers visitors a chance to see and learn about the importance the railroad played in developing the northern towns in Hamilton County. The depot is open for the summer each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be open June 30 and Aug. 4. Local art exhibits will be on display during special hours. Admission to the depot is free.
