Anderson Museum of Art awarded grant to preserve Carnegie Library building

The Anderson Museum of Art (AMOA) was selected as a 2024 Historic Preservation Fund Grant recipient. This funding will allow AMOA to move forward with Phase 1 of the Under One Roof Campaign, ensuring the preservation and protection of its historic Carnegie Library building, built in 1905.

Preserving a community treasure

Originally constructed as a Carnegie Library, the building was repurposed in the late 1990s to become an art museum, serving as a vital hub for creativity and cultural engagement in Anderson. As AMOA grows, it remains dedicated to preserving its historic home to serve future generations.

With the awarded $52,480 in grant funding, AMOA will complete essential preservation projects, including:

  • Roof replacement: Restoration of flat roof areas to prevent further water damage.
  • Limestone façade & masonry repairs: Work on the front entrance stairway and exterior stone to maintain structural integrity.
  • Interior plaster restoration: Repairing gallery walls and ceilings to ensure a safe and beautiful exhibition space.

This project has been funded in part by a U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund grant, administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.

The grant requires a dollar-for-dollar match, which AMOA has successfully secured thanks to the generosity of its supporters. With funding in place, work will begin this spring to restore and protect this historic landmark.

“This grant is a tremendous step forward in preserving our beautiful building, which has been a cornerstone of our community for more than a century,” AMOA Executive Director Mandee Spano said. “We are deeply grateful for the support of our donors and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for making this possible.”

AMOA remains committed to maintaining its historic home while serving as a space for creativity, education, and community engagement.
