Alice Mary Lewis

November 26, 1932 – April 26, 2020

Alice Mary Lewis, 87, Noblesville, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2020, the result of complications from the COVID-19 virus. Alice was born to Aram Haytain and Mary Jaworski on November 26, 1932 in Providence, R.I. Alice is predeceased by her sister, Betty; and husband of 47 years, Merle Edward Lewis.

Alice is survived by two sons, Mark Lewis, Zionsville, and Scott Lewis, Noblesville; three grandsons, Dr. Jason Lewis, Carmel, Aaron Lewis, Whitestown, and Ryan Lewis, Indianapolis; two granddaughters, Katie Yonekawa, Dallas, Texas, and Abi Ferguson, Noblesville; and six great-grandchildren, Hadley, Bennett, Griffin, Emmerson, Brooklyn and Juniper.

Alice was orphaned as an infant. She was adopted by her neighbor, Alice ‘Nanny’ Tourgee. Nanny raised Alice and her sister Betty.

Alice excelled in school, participating in musicals and serving as the high school band majorette. Immediately after high school, she completed her coursework at Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Providence. During this time, a young sailor, Merle ‘Bill’ Lewis, stationed at Newport Naval Base, caught her eye while attending church one Sunday. Their romance blossomed into marriage vows on July 19, 1952.

Alice and Bill enjoyed regular camping excursions throughout the Midwest and beyond.

With the boys in school, Alice returned to the workforce as Administrative Assistant for RISE Special Services for 20+ years, making many lifelong friends in the process. She especially bonded with the special needs children being served there.

Bill passed away December 23, 1999. Alice then relocated to Noblesville to be nearer to her sons. Her faith life bloomed as a member of Harbour Shores Church. The great-grandchildren remember her as ‘Grammie’ in this house.

Alice’s love of the Lord, generous and thoughtful gift giving, charity and grace will be missed by family and friends alike.

The family request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Missions at Harbour Shores Church at hsc.churchcenter.com/giving.
