A Hallmark story in the making

From the Heart

It’s Friday night, the day after Thanksgiving. Chuck is tucked away near the ceiling of Lucas Oil Stadium, keeping the scoreboard for the Indiana State Football Championships.

Me? I’m tucked under a blanket, sitting in Chuck’s recliner with a cup of decaf coffee. And, I’m watching a Hallmark movie.

Chuck always smiles whenever he walks in and sees me watching my favorite movies of the season … all on the Hallmark Channel.

Chuck asks me, “Has the girl arrived into town yet? Has she met the guy yet? Have they kissed yet? Have they lived happily ever after … yet?

So many yets. Well, it is Hallmark. I know it’s all inevitable, but it’s about the stories and the feelings that you snuggle up with whenever you watch a Hallmark movie.

I remind Chuck that our story is very much like a Hallmark movie. A little schmaltzy but oh, so sweet.

We met … unexpectedly. We were in the late fall and early winter of our lives. We were not looking to fall in love … but we did.

I watched him singing in the choir at his church. I heard him tell about his family and heard the love in his voice. I saw the twinkle in his eye when spoke of his years as a school superintendent. I saw the wooden Christmas projects he crafted with such great skill in his workshop. I heard the kindness of the thoughts in his heart. Those thoughts made my heart smile.

Within weeks of our first date I realized, some six years ago, that I was living a Hallmark movie … and I was falling in love.

I was reminded of that this week when something broke at our house. He said, “Well, I can’t fix everything but I can fix a few things.” I looked at him and said, “Yes Honey, I know you can fix broken things … you fixed my heart.”

Yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa. Yes, my friends, there IS love in Hallmark movies. Yes, my friends, he IS my prince charming and yes, we are living happily ever after.

Maybe I should call Hallmark. I have a story I continue to tell. I love the characters in it. I love how they show that they care about each other. I love telling their story …

Once upon a time in a cozy Midwest town there lived two lonely people with love that needed to be shared …

Stay tuned. There are more chapters that need to be written.
