As part of its comprehensive career exploration and readiness efforts, Sheridan High School held a health careers event for students last week.

Eight companies were represented at the event: IU Health, Marian University, Ivy Tech, Hamilton County Health Department, Hamilton County Public Safety Communications, KLR Medical Certification Training School, and Senior1Care/Legacy CNA Training.

Approximately 100 students visited the career exploration fair during the school day. Students with an interest in a career in a health career were sent specific invitations to attend the event, and other students also visited during their SRT (Student Resource Time) periods.

This was the third of four career exploration days held through a collaboration with Sheridan Youth Assistance Program (SYAP). Each of these days has focused on a specific in-demand career sector, so students can be introduced to people who have jobs in our local area that they may be interested in pursuing after high school. Students learn about the qualifications and training/education required for these careers, as well as seeing and engaging in hands-on activities provided by employers.

Some of the interactive displays the students really loved were using some of the physical therapy equipment from Riverview Health, playing a round of Pharmacy Jeopardy, and touching the cancerous versus healthy sets of lungs that IU Health’s respiratory therapy department provided.

“Our team is working hard to create positive career exploration and engagement activities for our students,” Superintendent Dave Mundy said. “Health careers represent a major employment sector in our community, so this event represents an important piece in our work.” He added appreciation for to SYAP and area health career partners who made this event possible.

The final Career Exploration Day this year will be held March 14 and will focus on careers that provide services for homes and people.
