Guerin Catholic opened its season on Tuesday with a big win at the Eagles Nest, taking care of Herron 87-61.
The Golden Eagles led 23-19 after the first quarter, then added another 23 points in the second period while holding the Achaeans to just 12. The result was a 46-31 lead.
Guerin ramped up its defense in the third quarter, holding Herron to just seven points. The Golden Eagles led by as much as 66-36, before the Achaeans scored a basket to end the period. Guerin Catholic scored at least 20 points in all four quarters.
Jack Hansen started his senior season with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Hansen also blocked five shots and dished out four assists.
Zach Munson also reached double-double status with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Luke Godfrey came off the bench to score 12 points. Bernie McGuinness and Jack Thieme both grabbed six rebounds. Clay Hepp and Josh Osborn also each had four assists.
Herron’s Ty Oldham led all scorers with 41 points.
“It was the first varsity game for Clay Hepp, and I thought he got better as the game progressed,” said GC coach Pete Smith. “We sure missed some easy shots around the basket, and we were quick on a lot of shots we took. Defensively we are really struggling, although most of those shots Oldham hit in the second half were contested.”
The Golden Eagles will host Roncalli on Friday in their first Circle City Conference game of the season.
