The Carmel girls basketball team’s Tuesday win over Zionsville was much more than a win.
It also marked a milestone for senior Amy Dilk. The Michigan recruit became the seventh Greyhounds player to reach the 1000-point mark, this after scoring 26 for Class 4A No. 1-ranked Carmel in its 66-48 victory against the No. 5 Eagles at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
“It’s a special moment, obviously,” said Dilk. She was happy that she got a chance to reach 1000 points at home, and so was her coach.
“I wanted her to do it so bad tonight at home,” said Greyhounds coach Tod Windlan. “We didn’t want to do it clear up at Crown Point.”
Dilk reached the milestone in the fourth quarter on what Windlan called “a little back-cut play” that she easily laid in. While it was thrilling to reach 1000 points, Dilk said that hearing the cheers is what made it special.
“Just hearing my teammates and the crowd cheering for me, that’s what I’m really going to remember,” said Dilk. “Obviously I could not have done that without them.”
Carmel led 14-11 after the first quarter, then began to pull away in the second period, going up 34-23 at halftime. The ‘Hounds outscored Zionsville in each period and also shot the ball well, making 26 of 45 baskets for a rate of 57.8 percent.
Carmel drained eight 3-pointers, with Dilk making four of them.
“I thought we shot the ball well,” said Windlan. “We just got to get to the line more.”
Tomi Taiwo added 13 points for the Greyhounds. Jasmine McWilliams had a great game, with 10 points and seven rebounds. Dilk and Blake Smith both dished out five assists.
Carmel is now 5-0 for the season. The ‘Hounds will play at the Crown Point Classic on Saturday, taking on Merrillville at 11 a.m. and the host Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
