Carmel, Westfield send 7 students to national leadership conference

Carmel’s own Sanjana Jain No. 1 in Fashion Design

More than 150 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members, advisers, alumni, and guests from around Indiana gathered June 29 to July 3 in San Diego, Calif., for the FCCLA National Leadership Conference. The students represented 19 schools from Indiana.

Locally, four students representing the Carmel High School FCCLA chapter and three from the Westfield High School Foodies Rock chapter participated in nationals.

The National Leadership Conference had an attendance of over 7,000. The theme of this year’s conference was “Make It Count,” which inspired attendees to share how they make it count while exploring career opportunities, developing leadership skills, and growing personally while making a difference in their families and communities.

FCCLA is a national organization that works with students in Family and Consumer Sciences and is described as the “Ultimate Leadership Experience.” Throughout the conference, members attended sessions focused on leadership and career development in CTE pathways.

Hoosier students competed in skill and knowledge demonstrations, called STAR Events, related to their studies in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences.

To participate at the National Leadership Conference, a student had to place in the top 2 at the state leadership conference. Indiana had 70 STAR event competitors and these students were awarded 23 gold medals, 40 silver medals, and 10 bronze medals (For detailed information.

Indiana had nine students place in the top 3 nationally and 20 students place in the top 10 nationally for the events.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with family as its central focus. Participation in national events, state programs, and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.
