Scott May has resigned as head football coach at Hamilton Southeastern.
May had just completed his 11th season as head coach of the Royals. He had a very successful run at Southeastern, earning a record of 86-35; he also coached the Royals to sectional championships in 2007 and 2011.
“I always tell kids it isn’t about them or me; it is about the team and this team will move on and be strong,” May said in a statement on the Hamilton Southeastern Athletics website. “I have enjoyed raising my boys as Royals and watching them grow up at HSE. Seventeen years goes too fast, but I think I need to step aside and let someone else make the calls.”
“I look forward to spending Saturday’s with my wife watching our sons playing college football.”
May and his wife Kathy have two sons: Jordan is a red-shirt junior at the University of Saint Francis, and Johnny is an HSE senior.
Before he was the head coach for the Royals, May spent six years as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator. He was part of Southeastern’s runner-up finish in the Class 5A state tournament in 2005.
May was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Bloomington South in the 1990’s; he was on the staff for the Panthers’ state championship run in 1993 and their runner-up finish in 1997. May also was the head coach at Garrett High School for two years.
“Coach May is a heck of a football coach and an even better man, he and I have been friends since 1992 when we taught and coached together at Bloomington South,” Southeastern athletic director Jim Self said on the HSE Athletics website. “Scott has been a part of our football program for 17 years, 11 years as our head coach. He has been blessed to get to coach both his boys here at HSE and I know he and Kathy are excited to be able to go watch them play next year. I am very thankful for Coach May’s leadership with our football program and in our athletic department. Scott will be a tremendous resource as we look to hire our next head football coach.”
