Lions charities win big at Poker for Sight Tournament

This past weekend, the Westfield Lions Club held its springtime Poker for Sight tournament, believed to be the largest charity poker competition in the Midwest. The Westfield Lions Poker for Sight dealt themselves a winning hand with the club’s first Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament of 2022. Nearly 300 players from all over the nation took part in three qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, vying for a $25,000 purse.

The championship round kicked off Saturday night. Brownsburg’s Chris Harrison took the $10,000 top award, followed by Fishers’ Brian Droz in the second spot earning $4,000, and Jeff Sollars of Marion winning $2,000 in third.

“This was one of the most exciting tournaments we ever had!” said poker chairman Mike Birk. “Second place Brian Droz, qualified 15th, with the lowest chip count of anyone and nearly took it all in a thrilling battle with Chris for the championship. It was fun to watch.”

As has become a tradition, before each qualification round the Lions present a donation to a local charity. This year a check for $2,500 each was given to Noblesville’s Third Phase Inc., Helping Veterans And Families of Indiana (HVAF), and the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana.

“It is an honor to be able to help and serve these local charities,” Birk said. “With the success of Poker for Sight, we were able to double our contributions this year.”

That is exactly what the Westfield Lions stand for, taking the Lions motto “We Serve” seriously. The earnings of this event will help local charities all over Central Indiana in the coming year.
