Paige Smith Trujillo, a 2009 graduate of Hamilton Southeastern, was inducted into the Hamilton County Basketball Hall of Fame Wednesday during the Royals’ basketball game with Noblesville.
Smith was a four-year starter for the Southeastern girls basketball team, and during those four years the Royals compiled a record of 86-11. During Smith’s career, HSE won two sectional titles and one regional championship, in addition to three Hoosier Crossroads Conference championships. Smith was also named to the All-HCC team all three years, was named to the 2009 Academic All-State Team, and was an all-Hamilton County player all four years.
Smith was a true multi-sport athlete, also competing in volleyball and track and field. She earned 12 varsity letters. Smith was the 2009 state champion in the discus and finished in fifth place in shot put. Smith was selected as the 2009 Indianapolis Star Suburban Female Athlete of the Year.
“It’s just really humbling,” said Smith. “I feel really blessed to be with such a great group of people who hae come before me and to be able to honor the work of all those people that have come before me. I feel really grateful to my coaches and my teammates and my parents just for making it possible, because it wouldn’t have happened without them.”
After graduating from HSE, Smith played four years at Indiana Wesleyan University. She led the Wildcats to the 2013 NAIA National Championship and was named the National Tournament MVP. She also made the 2013 NAIA All-America First Team and was an All-Conference player. Smith also was named as an NAIA All-American in discus.
Smith is now an assistant principal at Prosper High School in Prosper, Texas. She lives in Aubrey, Texas with her husband Ricky and daughter Sloane.
