Hamilton Southeastern’s girls basketball team got off to a strong start on Tuesday, winning its season opener over Columbus North 72-52 in a home game.
The Royals, ranked No. 18 on the IBCA pre-season poll, outscored the Bull Dogs 20-9 in the first quarter. Freshman Maya Makalusky made two 3-pointers, while Riley Makalusky added six points as well and Olivia Brown hit a 3. In the second quarter, it was Riley’s turn to make a pair of 3s, and that helped Southeastern maintain a 31-21 lead at halftime.
The Royals then started the third period on an 8-0 run, and that was a prelude to a 29-point quarter. Maya Makalusky poured in 13 points, including three 3s, with Teegan Acres, Maine Hooks and Lauren Stewart both hitting a 3 as well. Southeastern led 60-35 after three quarters, then added 12 more in the fourth, with Caleigh Scott and Riley Makalusky both making a 3-pointer.
In all, the Royals totaled 14 3-pointers in the game, shooting exactly 50 percent from long range.
“After a shaky start shooting the ball, our team settled down,” said Brian Satterfield, who was coaching his first game as HSE’s girls coach. “Our defense was the key tonight. We disrupted most of the night which allowed us to help create some offense.
Maya Makalusky and Riley Makalusky both scored 19 points for the Royals, with Maya draining five 3s and Riley making thre from downtown. Acres added eight points. Olivia Brown had a good all-around game with seven rebounds, seven assists and six points. Scott added six points and Riley Makalusky had four steals.
Southeastern travels to Fishers on Saturday to play in the Fishers Classic. The Royals take on Ben Davis at noon and then play Center Grove at 5 p.m.
