Dun dun dun dunnnnnn!
Classical music’s four most recognizable notes will resonate on Saturday evening, Oct. 9 when Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO), under Artistic Director Janna Hymes, opens its 46th season with its Masterworks 1 presentation: the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, plus the beloved Beethoven Symphony No. 5.
Weiss
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts (CPA), 1 Carter Green, Carmel. Guest pianist Orion Weiss will join the CSO in performing the Rachmaninoff selection. The concert also marks the official debut of Zachary DePue as the orchestra’s new Concertmaster.
Weiss is widely regarded as a “brilliant pianist” (The New York Times) with “powerful technique and exceptional insight” (The Washington Post). He has dazzled audiences with his lush sound, and has performed with dozens of North American orchestras as well as at major venues and festivals worldwide.
Tickets begin at just $20 for adults, and are available at CarmelSymphony.org. Abundant free parking – curbside or garage – is available within a short walk of the Palladium.
“We are thrilled to welcome a full house back to the Palladium!” Hymes exclaimed. “The CSO is one of only a handful of orchestras that continued to perform throughout the past year-plus, and we loved being able to continue to make the music, but with the severe attendance restrictions inside the hall, it simply wasn’t the same. Musicians feed off the excitement and enthusiasm and energy of a live audience. We’ve missed that, we need that, and we’re all anticipating getting back to what we know and love best – and that’s performing exceptional music in front of a big and appreciative crowd!”

Hymes continued, “That said, we fully acknowledge the unavoidable fact that this pandemic continues to present challenges for all of us. The CSO is working closely with the Center for the Performing Arts to ensure that we are providing the most secure and safest possible environment in which our fans can come and revel in this beautiful music, all season long.”
The CPA recently announced its campus health and safety policies and protocols:
- Masks are required for everyone age 3 and older (worn at all times except when actively eating or drinking);
- All patrons age 12 and up must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination when entering the Palladium and other CPA indoor spaces (paper vaccination cards, photocopies, photos or digital images confirming vaccination status will be accepted, along with valid ID);
- As an alternative to vaccination – and a requirement for patrons ages 5 to 11 who are not currently eligible for the vaccine – patrons may present physical or digital proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to the event.

Artistic Director Hymes has compiled an exceptional 46th season of music that runs the gamut from beloved classical compositions to energetic pops favorites. The orchestra recently celebrated Labor Day Weekend with its sold-out Classical Mystery Tour – the Music of The Beatles performance at Coxhall Gardens. The outdoor event, co-presented with Hamilton County Parks & Recreation, was the CSO’s first at the dazzling westside Carmel park.
