The Guerin Catholic boys soccer team took care of business on a rainy Saturday afternoon, beating Circle City Conference rival Bishop Chatard 3-0 in the second game of a girls-boys doubleheader.
The conference showdown was important for two reasons. First, it kept Class 2A No. 1 Guerin Catholic unbeaten in CCC play; the Golden Eagles have already beaten Heritage Christian and Brebeuf Jesuit in conference competition.
“We’ve got some internal benchmarks that we’re still trying to hit, but as far as what our record is in conference, we’re happy with that,” said GC coach Chris McGrath. “We’ve got two games left against Covenant (Christian) and Roncalli, so we’re looking forward to those.”
The second reason was that the game was a bounce-back win for the Golden Eagles. Guerin played at 3A No. 1 Noblesville on Thursday and lost 5-1. MCGrath said he was “happy to see that the guys had some resilience and were able to come out and do what they needed to do today.”
Three different players scored goals for Guerin Catholic: Aiden Soucie, Brooks Ellery and Evan Miller.
The Golden Eagles are 4-1 overall and continue conference play Tuesday at Roncalli.
Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 4 in 3A, sailed past Brebeuf Jesuit 6-0 in a Saturday home game.
Jonathan Leeper and Logan Puls both scored two goals for the Royals, with Carson Ordone and Blake Braden each scoring one. Yusuf Awad dished out two assists, and Noah Link and Gavin McKenzie both had one.
The Royals are 6-0-1 and host Fishers Tuesday night in the Mudsock game.
Fishers, ranked No. 2 in 3A, cruised past Franklin Central 7-0 in a Saturday Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.
Charlie Stump poured in four goals for the Tigers, with Keiji Nakamae scoring two and Anders Carbano adding one goal. Noah Reinhart handed out four assists, with Andrew Marslender, Nakamae and Stump all dishing out one. Tyler March earned his fifth shutout of the season.
Fishers is 3-0-1 in conference play and 5-0-1 overall.
GIRLS GAMES
The Noblesville girls soccer team made two trips to North Central this weekend and came home with two victories.
The Class 3A No. 1 Millers first beat 2A No. 6 Park Tudor 4-1 in a Friday night contest. Kiana Siefert scored two goals for Noblesville, with Ava Bramblett and Makenna Maloy each adding one goal. Isabella Griffey made one assist.
The Millers then defeated the host, 3A No. 7 Panthers 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Noblesville is 6-0 for the season and plays a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Wednesday at Westfield.
Carmel, rated No. 2 in 3A, took on two high-profile teams during the weekend at the Zionsville Invitational.
In a Friday night game, the Greyhounds lost to Notre Dame Academy (Parks Hill, Ky.) 1-0. Goalkeepers Aubree Empie and Bethany Ducat both made several saves to keep the talented NDA team at one goal.
Carmel rebounded on Saturday to beat 2A No. 1 Evansville Memorial 3-1. The Greyhounds are now 6-1-1 for the season and play at Lawrence North Tuesday in a Metropolitan Conference game.
Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 3 in 3A, hosted two ranked Evansville teams over the weekend and won both games.
On Friday night, the Royals sailed past 2A No. 2 Mater Dei 6-0. Southeastern led 1-0 at halftime, with Tatum Coleman scoring the goal. Southeastern erupted for five goals in the second half; Olivia Smith scored twice, with her first goal assisted by Morgan Castigilione.
Also finding the back of the net were Ella Chester (assist by Smith), Caroline Kelley (assist by Coleman) and Ayla Conn (assist by Makenzie Loftin).
“Great job by the team defense with another shutout,” said HSE coach Greg Davidson.
The Royals beat 3A No. 13 Evansville Reitz 2-0 Saturday afternoon. Chloe Count scored one goal, assisted by Coleman, and Castiglione got the other goal, with Daniella Rios-Rojas on the assist.
“Reitz has a great coach who had them organized and played HSE hard, which helps prepare us for our next game against Fishers on Wednesday at Fishers,” said Davidson.
Guerin Catholic, ranked No. 18 in 3A, lost to 2A No. 3 Bishop Chatard Saturday in the opening game of a Circle City Conference girls-boys doubleheader.
The Trojans scored the game’s first goal on a strike after a deep cross. The Golden Eagles tied the game when Emersen Jennings sent her own cross to Annabel Wright, who headed it into the net. But Chatard scored again before halftime on another strike, then added one more goal in the second half.
Guerin Catholic is 3-1 in conference play and 3-2-1 overall. The Golden Eagles finish conference play Thursday when they host Heritage Christian.
