Sheridan put together a solid performance on both ends of the ball at Tri-Central Friday night, and that sent the Blackhawks to a 40-6 Hoosier Heartland Conference victory.
“I thought we played our best ball game of the year,” said Sheridan coach Bud Wright. “We’re getting better as we go.”
The young Blackhawks scored in every quarter, and only gave up one touchdown to the Trojans in the first period. Aiden Garrison got Sheridan’s first score on an 11-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Mason Robinson.
In the second quarter, Gavin Reners and Peyton Cross both rushed in for touchdowns, and that was enough to give the ‘Hawks an 18-6 halftime lead. The second half followed the same pattern, as it began with Garrison catching a 19-yard touchdown throw from Robinson. Cross then caught a two-point conversion pass, and Sheridan led 26-6 after three.
The Blackhawks opened the fourth quarter with another pass play touchdown. Cole Webel hauled in an eight-yard pass from Robinson to score. Camden Spencer completed Sheridan’s scoring by making a short run to the end zone with 16 seconds left in the game. Freshman Owen Bell kicked both extra points in the quarter.
“We were missing several kids with injury,” said Wright. “I hope we get them before long. We had kids stepping and doing a heck of a job for us.”
Reners led the ‘Hawks offense with 137 yards rushing, while Cross gained 82 yards. It all added up to a big win, and one that gave Sheridan a 2-0 record in conference play.
“Last year we got off to that bad start in the conference,” said Wright. “This year we’re getting off to a lot better start.”
The Blackhawks are 2-1 overall and continue HHC play next week by hosting Delphi.
