Shamrocks use big plays to beat Eagles

Westfield picked up a solid victory at Zionsville on Friday, beating the Eagles 42-21 to open Hoosier Crossroads Conference play.
Both teams got on the board in the first quarter; Micah Hauser broke the ice for the Shamrocks by punching the ball in from the two-yard line. Westfield opened the game up in the second period, scoring 21 unanswered points to take a 28-7 halftime lead.
Maximus Webster got things started with 4:28 left by zooming 78 yards for a touchdown score. Trevon Hatchett then added a 10-yard touchdown with under a minute to go; a 29-yard catch from Ian Bruch set up the score. Zionsville fumbled the kickoff, and Gabe Aramboles streaked 83 yards on a reverse to give the ‘Rocks another touchdown.
The Eagles made a comeback in the third period, scoring twice to get within 28-21. But Westfield wouldn’t let them get closer, putting up 14 more points in the fourth. Hauser scored both touchdowns, first on a 43-yard run. For the second touchdown, Hatchett made an interception, the ball got loose, and Hauser recovered it for a 95-yard return.
Shamrocks coach Jake Gilbert was pleased with his offense, noting that Westfield “had a lot of yards per play. We were way down in time of possession and number of plays run. We made a lot of what we had.”
The ‘Rocks were helped by short-field situations, as well as two scores that were set up by special teams, which the coach said were “dominant tonight.” Caleb King had five extra point kicks and Sean Sullivan had one, making Westfield 6-for-6 on extra points.
“We had several really explosive plays that covered a lot of distance,” said Gilbert.
Webster was his usual efficient self, completing nine of 15 pass attempts for 123 yards. He also led the rushing with 99 yards, followed by Hauser with 93 yards. Aramboles had three receptions in addition to the 83-yard touchdown run.
Hauser led the defense with 14 total tackles, while Alex Wolf and Popeye Williams both had nine stops. Williams had 2.5 tackles for a loss.
The Shamrocks are 2-1 and host Noblesville next Friday.
