After a record-setting performance by one of their running backs last week at Mount Vernon, the Noblesville football team is heading home to Beaver Materials Field on Friday.
The Millers will take on Terre Haute South, the second year in a row that Noblesville has played the Braves. It will be one of four home football games in Hamilton County as the season reaches Week 2. Most other local teams will be playing their same second-week opponents as last season, although there are a couple different lineups for a couple squads.
First, the Millers. They took on Terre Haute South for the first time last season, also in Week 2, and won 50-0. That game was played on the road, and it was a fun trip back home.
The Braves will head up to Noblesville coming off a 27-7 loss to Harrison. The Millers, meanwhile, shrugged off an early deficit and came back to stun Mount Vernon, then ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, 57-36.
Noblesville’s offense was led by Logan Shoffner, who rushed for a school-record 347 yards. Shoffner scored four touchdowns, on runs of 23, 91, 55 and 72 yards. In addition, Alairic Rogers-Walton ran for two touchdowns, and Brayan Goméz-Sánchez gained 125 yards and also got a touchdown. Sam Steinhofer led the defense with 11 tackles.
CARMEL-DETROIT KING
After traveling out of state to open its season last week, Carmel will host an out-of-state team for its Week 2 contest: Detroit King.
The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Carmel Stadium. The Greyhounds, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, will take on a Crusaders team that’s playing its season opener, and will be showcasing its five-star quarterback, Dante Moore. The junior already has offers from several Division I colleges; he led King to an 11-3 record last season.
Carmel played at Louisville Trinity for its Week 1 game and came back to win 49-38. Senior quarterback Zach Osborne threw for 194 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 71 yards, scoring two touchdowns.
Junior Desmond Duffy and senior Jaedon King both totaled 80 yards receiving, with King making four catches (one for a TD) and Duffy getting three receptions (two for TDs). Juniors Will Heldt and Winston Berglund both made nine tackles.
GUERIN CATHOLIC-LAFAYETTE CENTRAL CATHOLIC
Guerin Catholic, ranked No. 6 in 3A, will play its home opener on Friday by hosting Diocese rival Lafayette Central Catholic in the annual Bishop’s Cup game.
The game, unfortunately, didn’t get to be played last season, as both teams had their seasons shut down during Week 2. The Golden Eagles won the 2019 edition of the Bishop’s Cup 50-28.
The Knights dropped their opener at Tri-West last week 34-32. Senior Clark Barrett had a tremendous passing game, going 18-for-28 and totaling 318 yards, throwing four touchdowns. Senior Ty Buche counted two of those touchdown receptions in his five catches.
Central Catholic’s defense also played strong. Senior Andrew Kline made 16 tackles, followed by junior Isaac Buche with 12 and sophomore Brinn Robbins with 11.
Guerin Catholic won a tough game at McCutcheon 27-20 last week for its season-opener. Senior Sam Miller was nicely efficient under center, completing 15 of 22 pass attempts for 144 yards and a TD. Sophomore Jack Cherry had six of those receptions.
Junior Justin Zdobylak totaled 89 yards rushing, while sophomore Cooper Navarro scored two touchdowns on the ground. Senior Adam Novelen made 10 tackles.
SHERIDAN-CLINTON CENTRAL
The fourth home game among county teams this week will be at Sheridan’s Bud Wright Stadium. The Blackhawks will host old rival Clinton Central in what is both team’s first Hoosier Heartland Conference game of the year.
The Bulldogs lost their opener to Frankfort last week 20-12. Junior Daiden Taulbee led the Bulldogs’ rushing with 173 yards and a touchdown. Senior Zander Hall made 12 tackles.
Sheridan is coming off a 55-13 loss to Western Boone, the three-time defending 2A state champion now playing in 3A. Gavin Reners led the Blackhawks’ rushing with 127 yards and one touchdown.
HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN-NORTH CENTRAL
Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 8 in 6A, will go on the road for the first time on Friday, traveling to Metropolitan Conference team North Central.
The Panthers played the Royals’ district rival Fishers last week, falling 27-7. Quarterback Rod Wheeler passed for 133 yards, while Antwan McGhee led the rushing with 110 yards. TJ McWilliams scored North Central’s touchdown on a 95-yard kickoff return.
Southeastern cruised past Lawrence Central, another MIC team, 35-7 in its opener last week. Blaine Wertz rushed for 55 yards and one touchdown, while Sam Jacobs passed for 51 yards, including two TDs.
FISHERS-PIKE
Fishers also will play an away game Friday, heading to Pike, also a member of the MIC.
The Red Devils began their season playing at Zionsville last week, falling 28-10. Senior Akim Abdur-Rahim had a solid passing game, completing 12 of 25 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. Junior Malachi Jackson had five receptions. Senior Dejuan Wells led the Pike defense with 11 tackles.
The Tigers opened with the afore-mentioned 27-7 over North Central. Junior Luke Minns went 9-for-14 with 173 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Carson Dunn rushed for 116 yards. Junior Grady Stanley led the Fishers defense with seven tackles.
WESTFIELD-HARRISON
Westfield, ranked No. 4 in 6A, will take a road trip Friday night to Harrison for its first away game of the season.
The Raiders opened their campaign last week with the 27-7 victory at Terre Haute South. Senior Tyler Knoy went 9-for-12 passing with 113 yards and one touchdown. Senior Max Bunger made four of those catches, while senior Kenneth Sims rushed for 111 yards and one TD. Junior Gavin Goodwin made 10 tackles.
The Shamrocks dropped their opener to 5A No. 1 Cathedral last week 14-0. Junior Cole Ballard threw for 109 yards, with Ian Bruch making seven catches. Westfield had four players reach double-digit in tackling: Micah Hauser made 16 stops, Tyler Dikos had 14 tackles, and Alex Wolf and Bryson Hoover both had 10 tackles.
HAMILTON HEIGHTS-BLUFFTON
In a schedule change, Hamilton Heights will play at Bluffton Friday. The Huskies were supposed to host North Montgomery, but the Chargers had to shut down their season for two weeks.
Bluffton is 1-0, having won its opener 20-7 over Northfield. Senior Lukas Hunt is the Tigers’ quarterback, and he threw for 105 yards and a touchdown last week. Jon San Juan rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Jacob Landis led the defense with nine tackles.
Heights dropped it opener to Monroe Central 10-0 last Friday. Senior Guy Griffey went 5-for-10 passing with 30 yards and also led the rushing with 41 yards.
