Hamilton Heights dropped its season-opener on Friday, but not without a fight, as the Huskies fell to Monroe Central 10-0.
The Class 1A No. 7 Golden Bears scored a touchdown in the first quarter and kicked a field goal in the second period to collect its points. Heights was able to hold Monroe Central scoreless in the second half.
Huskies coach Jon Kirschner said that “for the most part, we had a good night on defense. We gave up some big pass plays. They completed big passes and big plays, and we, offensively, did not get those big plays done.”
Several young Heights players took to the field. Kirschner said at one point there were six sophomores playing on offense.
Senior quarterback Guy Griffey led the Huskies in both rushing with 40 yards, and in passing by completing 5 of 10 attempts for 38 yards. Cooper Vondersaar had three catches totaling 29 yards.
“We could not get offense going tonight,” said Kirschner. “They make plays on offense and we didn’t, and that was the name of the game.”
Heights will try again next week in another home game, as the Huskies host North Montgomery. The Chargers beat North Putnam 30-0 in their season opener.
