Sheridan ran into a familiar buzzsaw to open the football season, as the Blackhawks lost to three-time defending Class 2A state champion Western Boone 55-13 Friday at the Stars’ field.
WeBo has moved up to Class 3A, where it’s ranked No. 6 in the pre-season poll. The Stars blasted off to a 28-0 lead after the first quarter. The Blackhawks scored both of their touchdowns in the second quarter, with Gavin Reners making a five-yard run, then Peyton Cross took the ball in from 11 yards with 37 seconds left in the half. Owen Bell kicked the extra point after Reners’ score.
Still, the Stars led 34-13 at halftime. Western Boone then added 21 unanswered points in the second half.
“They dominated us,” said Sheridan coach Bud Wright. “We made too many mistakes early and let them get out in front. We played one quarter and didn’t want to play anymore. First quarter we were lethargic.”
Reners was the leading rusher for the Blackhawks with 127 yards, while Cross gained 58 yards.
Sheridan will play its home opener at Bud Wright Stadium next Friday, taking on old rival Clinton Central in the first Hoosier Heartland Conference game of the season for both times.
