On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Crime Gun Intelligence Center officially became a regional task force now known as the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force (ICGTF). This team was made possible by several mayors, lawmakers and other key leaders including police chiefs and sheriffs.
Carmel Police Department (CPD) officials say they are proud to be a part of this task force. CPD’s involvement with the ICGTF will allow Carmel officers to collaborate with other Central Indiana agencies to track violent perpetrators who travel beyond county lines and throughout the state.

“It is well known that criminal activity is not limited to just one city or county,” said Carmel Police Chief Jim Barlow. “The Carmel Police Department’s involvement in the ICGTF will enable us to easily access and share information about violent perpetrators in and around the City of Carmel. This will allow us to better identify and stop criminal behavior in our city and the surrounding area.”
Moving forward, members of this task force will address violent crime in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan, Johnson and Shelby counties.
Since its inception in 2019, Indianapolis Crime Gun Intelligence Center has proven to be successful in removing illegal firearms out of the hands of criminals and have accomplished the following:
- Seized 717 firearms
- Arrested 813 people on state and federal charges
- Entered more than 24,547 entries into National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN)
- Followed up on more than 3,959 leads
This expansion was made possible by the Indiana State Legislature, led by Representative Greg Steuerwald, who initially sponsored House Bill 1558. The state budget passed this year also appropriated $10 million for operating costs over the next two years.
ICGTF is a partnership with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; Carmel Police Department; Avon Police Department; Zionsville Police Department; Indiana State Police; U.S. Attorney’s Office; and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. It is comprised of officers, detectives and analysts from these agencies.
