The Carmel Police Department (CPD) has announced its pledge to the 30×30 project, a national initiative to advance women in policing. Nationally, only 12 percent of sworn officers are women.

Research has long demonstrated the unique advantages of women officers. They achieve better outcomes for crime victims – especially in cases of sexual assault – and are perceived as more trustworthy by diverse communities.

CPD has the expectation to increase the representation of women to 30 percent within the department by 2030.

By signing the 30×30 pledge, CPD will identify and address the obstacles that women officers face through data analysis and surveying personnel.

CPD’s participation in the pledge will comprise of the following activities:

  • Submitting baseline data and policies outlined in the pledge
  • Pursuing all “essential” data collection and actions outlined in the pledge
  • Exploring additional pledge elements and pursuing those that are relevant to the department’s needs and can reasonably be achieved
  • Reporting on data and progress bi-annually

CPD officials say the 30×30 pledge is the necessary framework for how the department can improve and understand the barriers and experiences of women officers.
