Carmel’s 1970, ’71 boys golf teams reunite

Submitted The incredible tradition of team championships at Carmel High School started in 1970, when the Boys Golf Team won the school’s first-ever State Championship. The Carmel team repeated its State Championship in 1971. Members of the two teams celebrated 50 years by gathering at Crooked Stick Golf Club on Friday, July 23 to enjoy a round of golf, renew old friendships, tell many stories and to reminisce of those two great State Championships. Members of the 1970 state champion team that attended were Pete Holm, Doc O’Neal, Russ Craig, Don Currise, Bill Gardner and Bob Wright. In 1970 Carmel won by one shot over archrival North Central at Old Oakland Golf Club. Members of the 1971 State Championship team were Doc O’Neal, Russ Craig, Billy McDaniel, Steve Norris, Gary Duke and Bob Allen. The team won by four shots in 1971. The team gathered to also pay tribute to Coach Don Huffer, who passed away this past year. Coach Huffer directed a record five IHSAA golf State Championships. In Coach Huffer’s name the two teams raised $10,000 to donate to the Carmel Greyhound Booster Club. Athletic Director Jimmy Inskeep noted that Carmel High School currently owns 177 State Championships of which 161 were IHSAA State Championships. The Carmel Boys Golf Team is responsible for seven of those State Championships, an IHSAA record. Those additional Carmel High School graduates who attended the reunion were 1970 Mr. Basketball, Dave Shepherd, Randy Craig (1969 CHS golfer), Doug Perry, CHS golfer Tim Massey, Dan Chapman, Paul Rivest (member of the third-place 1972 team), and past Carmel Coach and Teacher, Tom Meeks, who spent 34 years in the game of golf as Coach, Executive Director of Golf in Indiana, and as the Director of Rules, Competitions and Tournament Set Up for the United States Golf Association. A special thanks to Crooked Stick Golf Club PGA Director of Golf, Tony Pancake, 1st Assistant PGA Professional Nate Holm, and Pete Holm for bringing everyone together to celebrate the wonderful tradition of state championships in Carmel, Indiana.
