Baseball: Westfield clinches tie for HCC title

The Westfield baseball team finished up Hoosier Crossroads Conference play on Wednesday with a 5-1 win at Avon.
The Class 4A No. 5 Shamrocks finished conference play with a 12-2 record and clinched at least a tie for the HCC championship. Zionsville is 11-2 and finishes its conference season tonight against Noblesville.
Westfield scored its first run in the third inning when Keaton Mahan scored on an error. The Orioles tied the game with a lead off home run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Shamrocks got the lead back in the top of the fifth. Maximus Webster singled in Mahan, then Casey Fanelli scored on Mac Clarke’s sacrifice bunt.
The ‘Rocks added two more runs in the seventh inning. Clarke doubled Markle home, then Brayden Hibler drew a bases-loaded walk to score Fanelli.
Trey Dorton also hit a double; he, Markle and Webster all had two hits. Logan Nickel pitched a complete game, tossing four strikeouts against four hits and no walks.
Westfield is 19-3-1 and hosts Kokomo on Friday.

Carmel moved up to No. 1 in the Class 4A rankings this week.
The Greyhounds played like it on Wednesday, especially in the fifth inning, where Carmel scored nine runs on its way to a 13-3 Metropolitan Conference win over Warren Central at Hartman Field.
The Warriors led 3-2 midway through the fifth, but that’s when the Greyhounds made their move. Evan Neukam hit a two-run double to put Carmel in front for good. Jackson Micheels followed that with an RBI single, then Alex Richter sent a two-run hit into right field. The ‘Hounds added four more runs after to lead 11-3.
Carmel wrapped up the game quickly in the sixth inning. Lleyton Lukowski was walked on to base, then scored on a Micheels triple. Micheels then scored on an error to get the ‘Hounds up 10, ending the game.
Micheels finished 3-for-4, driving in three runs. Neukam also went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles. Jack Bruington got the win, pitching three innings in relief with seven strikeouts against one hit.
The Greyhounds are 11-1-1 in the MIC, and finish conference play this afternoon at Warren Central. Carmel is 20-2-1 overall.

Fishers ran away with the second inning, and that sent the Tigers to a 7-3 HCC victory Wednesday at Brownsburg.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run. But Fishers took control in the second inning with six runs. Dom Oliverio tied the game with a two-RBI single, sending Jack Braun and JP Preston home.
The Tigers soon loaded the bases, then brought Jack Brown up to the plate. Gavin Clayton scored on a wild pitch, then seconds later, Brown cracked a three-run homer into center field. Oliverio and Carson Dunn both scored as well, and Fishers led 6-2.
The Tigers added another run in the fifth inning, when Braun singled Brown home. Both had two hits for the game. Tate Warner pitched a complete game, striking out eight.
Fishers is 16-12 and hosts Brownsburg tonight to finish the HCC and regular seasons.

Noblesville dropped a 7-0 HCC game to 4A No. 9 Zionsville Wednesday at Don Dunker Field.
The Millers were held to four hits, one each for Kolbi Kazmierski, Mason Bohland, Bryce Adams and Luke Wilson. The Eagles scored a run in the first inning, then three in the last two innings.
Noblesville is 12-15 and plays at Zionsville tonight to complete the conference series.

Sheridan fell to 1A No. 8 Rossville 11-0 in a five-inning away Hoosier Heartland Conference game.
Silas DeVaney had two hits for the Blackhawks.
