Hamilton Heights’ Maria Mitchell was truly a marathon woman Friday night when the Huskies track and field team competed at the Hoosier Conference meet at West Lafayette’s Staley Field.
It was worth it, however, as Mitchell won three events and helped the Heights girls team to a second-place finish. The Huskies scored 103 points, while host West Lafayette won the meet with 124.5 points.
Mitchell began the meet by joining Morgan Guthrie, Teegan Madara and Allyson Dinwiddie for a second-place result in the 4×800 relay. Mitchell then won the 1600 run, came back to take first in the 800 run, then cruised to victory in the 3200 run, in a new conference and school record time of 10:53.97.
Taylor Standridge finished second in the pole vault, with the 4×400 relay team of Camryn Runner, Kelsey Smith, Victoria Lopez and Morgan Guthrie placing second as well.
The Heights boys team tied for fourth place, scoring 63 points. Nate Jozsa placed second in the 100 dash and joined Lukas Knepper, Trey Ehman and Daniel Collier on the second-place 4×100 relay team.
