Baseball: Trailblazers score sweep of Bedford NL

The University baseball team had a tremendous Saturday, scoring a doubleheader sweep of Bedford North Lawrence on the road.
In the first game, the Class 2A No. 6 Trailblazers shut out the Stars 4-0. Bedford is receiving votes in the 4A poll, but University did not allow any runs and held BNL to only three hits.
The ‘Blazers scored a run in the top of the first inning, with Adam Oxley batting in Tyler Galyean. Oxley stepped up again in the third inning, knocking a two-run home run that also scored Luke Hellman. In the sixth inning, Jake Hooker got on base with a double and Matt Moore singled him home.
Oxley was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Weber Morse hit a double. Grayson Knight pitched four and two-thirds innings for the win, with Galyean relieving him and getting the save.
University won the second game 10-5. The Stars scored two runs in the bottom of the second, but the ‘Blazers came back and tied the game in the top of the third when Oxley hit a double to score Grady Hay and Galyean.
Bedford led off the third inning with a home run to go up 3-2. The Trailblazers took over after that with three runs in the bottom of the third. Knight batted in Hooker, Moore got home on Hay’s RBI fielder’s choice, then Seth Hogg scored on Galyean’s RBI fielder’s choice.
University held the lead from that point forward. In the fifth inning, Hooker scored on a wild pitch and Galyean batted in Moore. The Trailblazers completed the scoring with three runs in the sixth: Moore doubled home Oxley and Price, then later scored on a wild pitch.
Hellman and Moore both were 3-for-4 at the plate. Hay got the win, pitching four innings of relief.
The Trailblazers are 15-6 and play Tuesday at 2A No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic.

Hamilton Southeastern won the Plymouth Invitational on Saturday.
In the first game, the Royals beat the host Pilgrims 6-5. Southeastern scored its first run in the second inning when J. Bush hit a sacrifice fly to send Ty Bradle home.
The Royals then added five runs in the fifth inning. Southeastern loaded the bases, then Hunter Dilts drew a walk to score Jason Dettman. Another bases-loaded walk, this one to Cole Earlewine, sent Noah Wolf home and tied the game. Peyton Lusby got HSE in front by scoring on Griffen Haas’ RBI groundout. Dilts and Earlewine then both got home after Bradle reached on error.
Logan Callaghan got the pitching win, throwing four and two-thirds innings. Dilts relieved him for the save.
The Royals beat Penn 7-4 in the championship game. The Kingsmen scored a run in the top of the first, but Southeastern scored three in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again. Earlewine got on base with a triple, then was doubled in by Bradle. Eli Miller hit a double to send Bradle home, and Hunter Dilts scored on a pitcher’s balk.
The Royals added three more runs in the third inning. Hilfiker bunted Dilts home, then Hunter Wright smacked a right field double to score Miller and Hilfiker. HSE completed the scoring in the sixth nining when Bradle batted in Lusby.
Bradle and Miller both had two hits. Cam Howard pitched four innings for the win, with Colin St. Clair throwing two innings for the save.
Southeastern is 10-12-1 for the season.

Guerin Catholic split two games at the Catholic Classic, which took place Saturday at Lafayette Central Catholic.
In their first game, the Golden Eagles beat Bishop Noll 9-4. The Warriors scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Guerin Catholic answered with three in the bottom of the first inning. Will Fremion hit a sacrifice fly to score Braden Reel, then Aidan Morse doubled home Clay Patton and Sam Tabor.
The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the second inning. Adam Novelen got on base with a double, stole third, then scored on Patton’s sacrifice fly. Fremion came up next and smacked a triple, then scored on Tabor’s single. Davis Wagner batted in Tabor.
Wagner added a two-RBI double in the fourth inning, sending Patton and Tabor home. In the sixth inning, Tabor batted in Fremion.
Patton, Reel and Wagner also hit doubles. Tabor was 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs. Wagner threw four innings, striking out four.
Guerin Catholic played the host Knights in the second game and lost 7-5. The Golden Eagles had the best start possible, leading off the first inning with a Braden Reel home run. But LCC scored six runs in the third inning and held the lead from there.
Guerin scored twice in the fourth inning: Tabor batted in Patton and Novelen doubled Tabor home. Tabor scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, then Anthony Ferrucci got home when Fremion reached on error.
Reel, Novelen and Ferrucci all had two hits, with Patton hitting a double. Spencer Wilt pitched two and two-thirds innings, striking out seven.
The Golden Eagles are 9-14 and travel to Roncalli on Tuesday to begin a Circle City Conference series.

Westfield fell to Zionsville 3-1 in a Saturday Hoosier Crossroads Conference game, giving the 4A No. 8 Eagles a sweep of the 4A No. 2 Shamrocks.
Zionsville scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to get on the board. The Shamrocks tied the game when Keton Mahan led off the fourth inning with a home run. But the Eagles scored twice in the fifth inning to clinch the game.
Mahan went 2-for-3 at the plate. Logan Nickel pitched a complete game, striking out five and issuing no walks.
Westfield is 13-3-1 and plays Tuesday at Lapel.

Sheridan was swept by 2A No. 8 Carroll Saturday in a Hoosier Heartland Conference doubleheader.
The Cougars won the first game 5-0. The Blackhawks were held to just two hits, one each from Christian Clausen and Preston Weir.
Carroll won the second game 8-2. Sheridan scored a run in the top of the first inning; Corbin Murray got home on Collin McNair’s RBI groundout. The ‘Hawks scored again in the sixth inning when Cameron Hovey got home on a passed ball.
Sheridan is 6-11 and hosts Delphi Monday in another conference game.
