Volunteers, meet nonprofits at new ‘Get on Board’ event

Hamilton County’s first Get on Board event is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 13 in the atrium of the Ivy Tech Community College Noblesville campus. The free event, presented by Hamilton County Leadership Academy and Hamilton County Community Foundation and sponsored by PNC Bank, aims to connect potential volunteers with local nonprofits.

Attendees can meet and mingle with representatives of more than 25 Hamilton County agencies at display tables in the atrium, and they’ll have the chance to hear from community leaders about board service and how volunteers can help meet the needs in Hamilton County.

Attracting new, diverse voices is a point of emphasis, given the challenges of recruiting board members who reflect the growing diversity of the communities local nonprofits serve.

“Diverse populations are increasing in Hamilton County, and we are eager to find volunteers who reflect that growth,” said HCLA Executive Director Andrea Marley.

The community leadership program holds a Social Services Day annually as part of its 10-month curriculum, educating class members about Hamilton County’s needs as well the agencies working to address them. The inaugural Get on Board gathering will take place immediately after HCLA’s 2021 class day.

The event also will include an educational component, with short presentations from Tom Kilian, president of the Hamilton County Community Foundation; Nancy Chance, executive director of the Good Samaritan Network; and Eddie Rivers, CEO of Rivers Resources.

Participants interested in volunteering or board service are encouraged to bring a resume, but that is not required.
