Friday’s softball game between Class 3A No. 2 Guerin Catholic and Westfield got tense during the later innings.
Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the host Golden Eagles got on the board with a run on a sacrifice fly. That would be enough for Guerin Catholic to keep its record unbeaten for the season, as it edged out the Shamrocks 1-0.
With one out in the sixth, Izzy Kemp got on base with a single, then moved to second base on an error and to third base on a passed ball. Alicia Flores was at the plate, and her fly to center field allowed Kemp to get in.
Kemp had a no-hitter going through the sixth inning, and she was able to hang on to it in the seventh. Westfield threatened when Maggie Roh reached second base on an error, then was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Carey. But Kemp struck out the last two batters to end the game.
Kemp tossed 17 strikeouts for the game and allowed no walks in addition to no hits. Ana Macha was 2-for-2 at the plate.
Carey and Natalie Deck played solid defense for Westfield, while Lilah Denton pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits to the big-hitting GC team.
The Golden Eagles are 7-0 and next play Monday at Warren Central. The Shamrocks are 2-6 and host their own invitational today, playing Huntington North at noon and Silver Creek at 4 p.m.
