Neither snow nor rain stops Carmel PD from catching mail crook

On Thursday, Carmel Police responded to the 14000 block of Staghorn Drive regarding suspicious activity. It was reported an individual was seen driving a vehicle in the area and taking mail from mailboxes.

Upon arrival in the area, officers located a vehicle that matched the description given and attempted initiate a traffic stop on it. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop for officers and a pursuit ensued. The driver eventually pulled into the parking lot of 2150 E. Greyhound Pass where pursuing officers were able to get the vehicle stopped and take the suspect into custody.

The suspect in this case has been identified as Makayla Lynn Burkart, 23, Indianapolis. Burkhart has been charged with the following:

  • Resisting Law Enforcement – Level 6 Felony
  • Theft – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Driving While Suspended Prior – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Criminal Recklessness – B Misdemeanor

Burkart also had outstanding warrants out of Marion and Grant counties and is being held on those as well.
