Ivy Tech awards majority of state’s College Core credentials

According to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE), the number of high school students earning the Indiana College Core was over 1,600 for the class of 2019. During the 2018-2019 academic year, Ivy Tech Community College awarded 1,260 Indiana College Core completions to high school students, accounting for nearly three-fourths of the Indiana College Core awards to the class of 2019.

CHE further noted that earning the Indiana College Core in high school is associated with significant cost savings and student success, including increased college-going rates for Indiana College Core earners. The Indiana College Core is a 30-credit-hour block of general education college-level coursework that transfers seamlessly to all Indiana public colleges and universities, and some private institutions.

“As the largest provider of dual credit programming in the state of Indiana, Ivy Tech Community College is committed to ensuring that high school students have access to intentional programming aligned with the Indiana College Core, or a short-term certification, that will prepare high school graduates for the workforce,” said Dr. Rebecca Rahschulte, vice president of K-14 Initiatives & Statewide Partnerships. “We are honored to be the post-secondary dual credit provider at more than 425 high schools and career centers throughout the state of Indiana.”

The Indiana College Core, formerly the Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC), was created in state statute in 2012. Ivy Tech in the first year awarded 34 STGEC completions to high school students prior to high school graduation. In the most recent academic year, 2019-2020, Ivy Tech awarded 1,419 Indiana College Core completions to high school students, a more than 4,000 percent increase since the program inception.
