Guerin Catholic got back on the winning track on Tuesday, beating Shortridge 76-30 at the Eagles Nest.
The Blue Devils scored the first basket of the game, but it was all Golden Eagles after that. Guerin Catholic embarked on a 12-0 run to take a 12-2 lead. Joseph Bobilya scored eight points during that stretch, including a pair of 3-pointers.
After Shortridge made two free throws at the 2:21 mark, the Golden Eagles went on a 26-0 run that took them well into the second quarter. Guerin grew its lead to 38-4 with 2:45 left in the second; Kaleb Edwards scored eight of those points, with Matthew Etchison assisting him on three of Edwards’ four baskets. Bobilya also threw in two more 3-pointers during the run.
Bobilya finished the second quarter with 14 points, and the Golden Eagles were ahead 44-11 at halftime.
“The team played very well,” said GC coach Bobby Allen. “We’ve been working on the team getting better as a group, communicating better, finishing better, sharing the ball better and we did all those things tonight. I couldn’t be more proud about what these guys did.”
Guerin Catholic continued to roll in the third period, leading 64-20 once it came to an end. Matthew Gillis scored six points in that quarter, including a putback that started a 7-0 run for GC. Jack Cherry also made a 3-pointer, and Elijah Edwards finished the period with a layin. Etchison and Elijah Edwards both had 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
“Guys are cheering for each other, guys are realizing they don’t have to be on the court all the time to be productive for this group,” said Allen. “We’re trying to work on things off the court right now. We think those things are going to take care of themselves with our group we have right now. But if we can get everyone excited about what’s going on, whether they’re in the game or on the bench, then we feel like it’s just going to make this experience better for everybody. And right now, they’re all buying in to what we’re planning to do.”
Ten different Golden Eagles players scored at least two points. Bobilya led the way with 22, followed by Gillis with 14 points and Kaleb Edwards with 12 points. Gillis led the rebounds with nine; Guerin had 39 in all. Kaleb Edwards, Garrett Kreiner and Cherry all collected five rebounds.
Kaleb Edwards led GC in assists with six. Will Grissom handed out five assists, and Etchison had four assists and four steals.
The Golden Eagles are 14-3 and play at Indianapolis Washington on Thursday.
